so my v6 has been doing this for a while. it just whistles while driving. i thought it was my alternator, but that went, put in a BRAND NEW one and i still have this whistling noise. its got to be a vacuum leak or something i think. in an attempt to find it one day i took out the ol can of carb cleaner. when i sprayed right by the front of the intake manifold (3.4L V6) the engine like choked out and almost died.

has anyone had this happen to them? any ideas about how to narrow down the possibilities?

car is 94 3.4L v6, auto

I had the same problem with my carb'd 383 in my Monte. It was a blown intake manifold gasket. That's why when you sprayed car cleaner it almost died, because it sucked the carb cleaner through the blown gasket and right into the cylinders.

Not the worst thing in the world, at least it's not a head gasket problem.

If it's the intake manifold gasket I have a set for a 3.4 somewhere, you just have to wait 'til I get home in 10 days

could it be a cracked manifold also?

i totally forget what its called, but there is a vacuum line that sits right there in the intake. its a rubber connection to the intake. a rather large one with two lines running down either side of the intake. check that first. man i am so dumb right now.

It could be. If it's that then you would have to take the car to a welder and they should be able to weld a small crack right up. Might be better since there is a chance that you might not have to take off the intake manifold, if there is enough room to work safely that is...

I have seen cracked intake manifolds before, and it was an obvious crack. But more often than not it's just a blown gasket. The gasket is cheap, the labor can be a pain in the butt.
