edit1: now that I think of it a car seat is a great example. look at the instructions. where the shoulder belts go through the seat must be above the child's shoulders.

Right, but bringing it full circle, that seems (to me) like the illegality of it is because they are non-factory and non-DOT approved restraints so you may not technically be wearing a (legally defined) seat belt in the eyes of a police officer. Not because a 5 pt harness system is less safe than a basic 3 point. The danger comes in improper mounting and placement. |
