GI Auto Salvage has a decent selection of engine parts. They have whole blocks they pull from cars and trucks, sometimes disassembling the blocks to sell off the individual parts (heads, headers, wiring horness, distributors, etc). You can find a listing for them on yellowpages.com. GI Auto salvage is off route 46, so its not central per se, but might be your best local choice atm.

the best thing you can do to help yourself if you are junk yard hunting is to actually go to one. most of the places that act as dismantlers have rip off prices, at least double what you would pay and a u-pull-it type place.
i am gonna be making at least one trip to the yards this week. is there a particular vortec casting you are lookin for or will any set work for your needs?

WayFast84 11-12-2006 08:51 PM

any casting as long as its v8

the better question is prolly, do you have money for them right now? i don't really have space to store any more engine parts around here. lol

Dave, I happened to go to GI auto salvage on friday (1 of 5 junkyards i hit friday). It seems just like the rest of them, its slowly turning into a dismantling place. I did not see more than 2 f-bodies and i found 1 not crushed monte carlo. sort of out of character for that place.

bad64chevelle 11-27-2006 10:44 AM

Finding a decent yard is hard to do anymore. The only yard I really go to anymore has only old stuff, which wont help wayfast. As for Monte Carlos, there are a few right over the bridge in Morrisville PA that have some Montes. One had a few turd gens also!

Well damn. Before they paved the place their f-body collection, especially third gens, was decent. It was a PITA to get around the cars since they were partially submerged in water, but at least there was stuff to choose from. I admit its been a few months now since I've been there, and the numbers were dwindling then. I did see many engine blocks off to the side of the main building though.

I think GI is pulling more and more of their own stuff so they can charge more and so they stop some of the stuff that walks out. I did give them props though - had a handful of odd and end plastics for the steering column and the guy at the gate just made a face and waved me through without paying. Nothing they could put an "honest" price to I guess.

Folks who go to junkyards should be prepared to haggle - never pay what they tell you. Just think about it a moment, turn to leave to put it back, then turn around again and offer a smaller price like you aren't sure if you really want it. Works for me.

yes it is a "you-pull-it" for the most part. There are a few things they take off and sell such as motors in great shape, tranny's, hub cabs, alternators, ect. But for the most part, you roam the yard yourself and grab whatever you need, then show them at the front office and pay. No one bothers you, hassels you, nothing. I love going there.

It's right off of 8A on the Turnpike.

Were they attached to a roller block? You might be able to pull the heads & sell the rest.

Is there a big sign for this place right on 476? Igo past that on my way to my grandparents. If it is as large as you say it is I may try and hit that one this weekend. If anyone knows of any other U pulls in the trenton area please let me know. I know about the one off of 13 in PA and the one out by 611 too. Went to Red and Black last weekend but no 5 speed 3rd gens.... Looking for the sheet metal around the clutch hydraulic assembly for a template for my auto -> manual conversion if any one has any shells laying around.
