Who has bought a car out of state?
 

I want to be able to drive the car from wherever I get it from. What exactly do I need to do?

have it insured and registered before you pick up the car. if its from a dealer, they can write you a temp plate but you still need to get insurance. its not too different then buying a car in state

I'm most likely buying a car from another person, not a dealer. I wanted to be able to inspect the car, write a check, and drive away.

do you know anyone with dealer plates? or anyone with a trailer?

or use plates from a different car and hope you don't get caught :lol:

this is what you have to do to be LEGAL. get the VIN number of the car, and call your insurance(or go to your agent) add it to your policy and get a card(or any proof of insurance). Then go out to see the car. Once you see the car and pay for it, take the title and go to the local DMV in the state where you are buying the car.(ie NY PA CT... wherever) and you request "In-Transit" tags(or called similar) which with proof of insurance will allow you to drive the vehicle legally for i think up to 7 days(maybe 14) Once back in your home state you then just take the title to NJ DMV and register it like normal. To confirm the availability of transit tags(temp tags) go to the website of that states department motor vehicle, and get the phone number and CALL and ask, since the websites themselves dont explain everything. You don not have to be a dealer in order to get temp tags as far as i know. I know NJ does issue these type of in-transit tags.

I had a guy from FL fly up here to NJ to buy my old ford truck, he took the bus from newark to my place, got the title, spelt IN the truck overnight, then took a bus to the DMV in englewood, got transit tags and then drove it back to FL.

damn that seems like a hassle.
but worth it when driving back to FL

i dont know what state you would eb buying from so i just used that as an example of the info you need to provide and the process involved. MOST states have this type of temp registration available.

my cousin and i went to Ohio to pick up a 61 caddy, and all we did was pick up the car, and go to a local dmv, prove you have insurance, you get as said before, "in transit tags" and you have a week to get to your destination

In PA you can go to one of the 'Tag' places and get a temp plate which is basically the 'in transit' plate. You still need to make sure you have insurance coverage with your insurance company. I've actually kept the seller's tag on cars and driven it home and then sent them back their tag. Or I've had people drive the car/truck to my house and I'll give them a ride back to their house. This way it gives you time before you have to go to NJ dmv and deal with the title, tax and registration.

Bought the 10xth from someone in Kansans, only thing I saw were a ton of pics, carfax report, vin check with SLP and happen to know someone in law enforcement out there. Had it shipped once I paid for it, guy send me his plates, reg and insurance card so I could drive it home from the yard. (title took 2 weeks to get from GMAC.

I'm not buying a car without me seeing, listening, and driving it. I'm waiting on info from a couple of different state motor vehicle departments.

seeing the car before hand isnt a problem, and i agree with NLinnear. Just do your homework before you go out there, locate the closest DMV etc and plan all that out before hand. And with the insurance, its pretty easy, call them with the VIN the day before, and if for some reason you DONT buy the car, just call them back up and have them remove it from your policy. you'll only end up paying for like a days worth of insurance if anything.

Some type of cars you can do what I did - Rare types, collectors, exotic. Just do the homework on the car first. Now if you buy a 2002 WS6 from out of state - Hell yeah I want to see it in person.

even if you use a personal check, you can just drive the seller to the nearest bank (the same company that you use of course) and have them verify the fact that the funds are available. thats what I did when I bought my GTA.

Being that I am buying a Corvette, and it will be my only car for a while, I need to know exactly what I'm getting. I will have a friend with me to help me check out the car (as long as its within a day's distance of driving).

No more f-bodies for now.

Mike, when I sold my old '87 SS on Ebay, the woman mailed me a bank check for the car. Once it cleared my account, I signed the title over and mailed it up to her in NY. She registered/insured it in NY, and then drove down with her husband, put on her plates, and drove it home. Course, she took my word that the car was going to be fine for a 7hr drive back to upstate NY (and it was!) but the car was a bone-stock 180hp Monte SS that was never beat on. I don't blame you for wanting to check out any Vette that you buy!

i was lucky, i was buying the exact same car so i didnt have much to worry about. both were red 2001 firebirds :)

Steve, that is about what I did with my 77. Went down & looked at it, wrote a check, took the signed Delaware title home. Got insurace the next day, title & QQ plates the day after, and back down and had AAA tow it home. :)

there was no way in hell i was makin my trip twice, my car was out in pittsburgh
