Moser 9'' / other rears

hey does anyone have a moser 9'' ? and can you any of you help me out on some info im looking at getting a new rear looking at the moser 9'', moser 12 bolt and the strange rear whats everyones info on them ?

Ian 03-15-2009 01:10 AM

when you say Strange rear, I'm assuming you mean the S60 right? if so, that's a bit overkill for your car.

not really sure what kind of info you're looking for on the 9" and 12 bolt. I thought I remembered hearing that one had a better torque arm mount than the other. I think there is a difference with 3 and 4 channel abs between the two also. I'm sure someone else will chime in with more accurate info.

here is the list of rears im looking at im looking for a bolt in rear put oil in and go.

Moser 12 bolt
Moser 9''
Strange 12 bolt
Strange S60

if you have any of the rears or know info on the what is the best for street/strip use and an ez rear to install

Blackbirdws6 03-15-2009 07:22 AM

12-bolt and S60 are the easiest to install IIRC. I just picked up a S60 rear for the bird with a new driveshaft and it came totally assembled with fluids and such. It also comes ready to roll with LT1 backing plates so no hassle with that as well. Pricing was very solid as well compared to the others.

A lot of people like the 9inch which is just fine but even though the S60 is overkill even for my setup, I would prefer it to be bulletproof and very straightforward to install.

Good luck with your choice.

i have a moser 9". The only thing i dont like is that the torque arm bracket for the rear will hit the floor is the car is lowered, and make a hole:-x.
I spent a little more money and got the moser aluminum center section as well to save a few pounds.

Other than that its a sweet setup.

the 12 bolts are probably the most economical, and like said above the s60 is a bit overkill and pretty heavy as well.

The moser 12bolt uses 4 small bolts to hold the torque arm to the rear, which tend to come loose and damage the rear and torque arm, while the strange 12 bolt uses the factory style through bolts. If you go 12 bolt i would go with the strange rear.

ian is refering to the moser 12 bolt. mosers design uses 4 short bolts (2 top, 2bottom) to install the tq arm, rather than the factory style long bolts and nuts. people (myself included) have experienced these short bolts backing out, and if you dont catch it they can cause some damage.

mine have since been given a bit of assistance in staying tight (small tack weld on each bolt) but some might not want to go that route

BonzoHansen 03-15-2009 12:03 PM

Chris (1quikbird) just had that problem with the bolts backing out IIRC.

alright from hearing what everyone has to say about the moser and strange i think im going to go with the strange rear but i dont know if i want the 12bolt or s60 what is the differance between the strange 12 bolt and the strange s60 ? is one alot more heavy ? and if you have one where did you get it and how was the price and did you get to pick the gears you want ?

Mike 03-15-2009 12:57 PM

one is a 12 bolt and the other is a dana 60....... the s60 is heavier but stronger, the 12 bolt you can use the stock length drive shaft, the s60 you need a drive shaft (sometimes you can find a package deal)

no matter where you get it you choose the gears.

The S60 is less efficient I think too.

Mike 03-15-2009 01:03 PM

slightly

really? I was under the impression that it was more efficient. I always heard it went 9 inch, 12 bolt, S60 in order of least efficient to most efficient.

//<86TA>\\ 03-15-2009 07:56 PM

yes

Mike 03-15-2009 08:00 PM

12 bolt uses factory length driveshaft with a different u-joint, s60 AND 9inch need custom drive shafts

Mike 03-15-2009 08:44 PM

hmm, i just had to go through this when i ordered my drive shaft

camaroracer1992 03-15-2009 09:08 PM

go moser 9 inch and never look back

Slow 88 03-15-2009 09:53 PM

moser 9" here no probs at all

Firebird67dude 03-16-2009 12:35 AM

So whats this 3 and 4 channel abs stuff? What would a 93 car have? I'm also looking at rears as well.

lilredjeep91 03-16-2009 07:17 AM

thats a good question tim, how can i tell if my car is 3 or 4 channel abs ? and the moser 9" can i use the factory drive shaft ?

camaroAL 03-16-2009 07:24 AM

i use a moser 12 bolt which is less rotating mass than a 9" . have been 1.36 60ft. with no probs. 33 spline axles spool and rear girdle. over 450 passes running mid to low 10's. i would not use a stock drive shaft but it will work.

I have a 9" in my street car and had to "look back" to see all of the pieces when I scattered it all over the track.
