opti!!!

hey guys, im ordering a new opti and i was just curious to see who is using what and what works well for a good price. i have heard the msd opti is hit or miss but its a good unit but its 500. i also heard the gm unit works well and is a little cheaper. let me know what you guys think,

thanks:mrgreen:

You need the corvette opti.

GM original part. Get it from thepartsladi on ebay. Win.

deadtrend1 10-06-2009 07:44 PM

how are you handling this just asking. your motor is a 94, are you swapping everthing (cam included) onto the motor to keep your vented style? You would have to i imagine for the crank trigger and all.

LTb1ow 10-06-2009 07:45 PM

Yea... you may be in a pickle here.

Lt1_8U 10-06-2009 07:46 PM

im just throwing the the whole 92 vette motor into the trans am, im not swapping anything from the old motor to the vette motor besides accesories. yeah i didnt think of that

LTb1ow 10-06-2009 07:47 PM

Woah, can you explain this?

My mistake. Vettes are silly.

Are you planning on keeping the SD or swapping over the 94 MAF?

Lt1_8U 10-06-2009 07:48 PM

92 vettes had an lt1, they were one year ahead of the camaro/trans am. my car is a 96

LTb1ow 10-06-2009 07:51 PM

Ok... well.

92 = SD and non vented spline driven opti.
96 = MAF and vented, dowel driven opti.

92 would also be PROM chipped not PCM... you may run into trouble operating the 4L60E..

its a stick shift. His biggest problem will be inspection.

Oh and, buy a accell opti from jegs! :)

LTb1ow 10-06-2009 07:54 PM

You run an Accell on yours?

I did not read much good things about them..

My choice would be a GM optical part and throw the MSD cap/rotor in it.

91chevywt 10-06-2009 07:55 PM

he should still be able to run with the MAF on that motor. I have a MAF motor running the speed density setup so I would imagine it would work the other way around

i might have someone for inspection:shifty:

are you serious about the accell? haha

LTb1ow 10-06-2009 07:57 PM

Best bet is to browse the interwebz. Research the failures MSD, Accel, and GM ones had...

what works great for 10 people might not work well for 6 people. those 6 people post their complains about it loudly, the other 10 drive their cars and not worry about posting positive comments.

Always a negative nancy...

But ok. I run a GM one, it sees 6400 ish, and a big coil. It still lives.

thats an extremely valid point, i think i might try the gm opti just because its a gm part lol

transmaro93 10-06-2009 08:33 PM

just ordered a "delphi" opti from parts ladi on ebay for like $250... from what iv read they are jsut as good as the original delco and delphi is a company that makes alot of OEM GM electronics.... so i trust it... i wont use any accel products inmy car i hear the yare garbage... but to each his own...

Knipps 10-06-2009 08:43 PM

+1, i pulled mine apart to locktite the rotor screws but other then that i shift at 6250ish and ive bounced off of my 6500 limiter on burnouts a couple times

Lt1_8U 10-08-2009 08:27 AM

im going to stop by a gm dealership and see how much they are charging for an opti.

LTb1ow 10-08-2009 08:34 AM

A lot.

Pampered-Z 10-08-2009 09:09 AM

Before you go buying that none vented opti your may want to go doing some more research on the engine swap, It might be easier to throw a cam in and convert it to a vented opti and reuse your intake and such.

On the intake alone: Fuel lines on the F-bodies are different on the 92-93, then the 94+s. I'd assume the same is true for the vette motor. the 92-93s are 22lb injectors, 94+ are 24s so you need to swap injectors. Vacuum lines/Evac are different. Throttle body linkage MAY be different ( it is for autos ) The EGR connections are different, your going to need blockoff plates, and if you don't already you'll probably need to program the EGR out?

92 Vette may ( sorry I'm not sure ) had oil coolers, if you car doesn't then you need to remove it and buy an adaprter for the oil filter.

Also the oil sending unit is located on the side of the engine, you'll need to swap over your original S.U and plug the hole on the side.

this more then anything could be the big issue:

The none vented Opti is different then the vented in how it's wired, you are going to need a different pingtail for the conenctions into the wiring harness. I don't even know if it will work? I don't know of anyone that went from vented to none-vented.

Thanks all I can think of off the top of my head.

deadtrend1 10-08-2009 11:30 AM

Exactly what I was thinking John. Except you explained it in more detail then I possibly could in post 3

gonzo4886 10-08-2009 02:15 PM

What year LT1 do you have? If you have a non-vented opti you don't have to do a full conversion. All you have to do is make your own vent. Here's a write on how to do this. http://www.corvettefever.com/howto/16758/index.html
I've used a MSD opti before and I thought it was a quality piece. You can tell a huge difference compared to the stocker. Summit also sells their own brand of opti. I've never seen one but everthing I've ordered that was summit brand has been pretty decent quality. GM opti is crap
