ticking sound
ok so i did quite a bit of research and so far what i've been reading says it could be but not limited to:
faulty O ring for the oil pump bent/broken push rod loose rocker loose header bolt loose plug/plugwire low oil now maybe this could pin point it. i dont really hear it at idle. or when cruising, i hear it when the rpms go up when its going to shift. def sounds like the passenger side. does this specifically fit anyone of those or something else? |
immmmmm lets hear it........

sounds like a '''lifter to me???? |
i was just going to edit and put that possibility haha
damn, i had this happen to my 305, how different would it be to do on an ls1? |
anything happen before the noise started? mis-shift, oil change, etc...
|
noo its an automatic and i've been driving it the same as i always have been, easy with the exception of merging onto highways in a spirited manner. and i'm actually due for an oil change
|
Header/Y tapping the floorboard from a worn motor mount?

Loose plug wire or coil pack arcing to the valva cover or the head.

something i have to go up from the bottom for? |
Does it sound like it's coming from the engine compartment or possibly under the car like an exhaust leak? Check around the catalytic converter on the passenger side, it might be leaking where the y-pipe goes into the cat. Also check the AIR connection to the header to see if a bolt or nut loosened up. Also check the header where the AIR fitting and EGR fitting is welded to see if the welds might be leaking. It also might be worth doing the oil change to see if it goes away. The rear passenger side spark plug and wire are a PITA to get to. I think I ended up removing the AIR fittings and pulling a coil or 2 to be able to reach back to the last plug/wire.
|
ah okay i'll try all of that now and report back
|
ok possibly the culprit? the gasket on the passenger side, air? i'm not sure it comes out of the top of the header
https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&i...disp=inline&zw i need to get oil anyways so i'll run to the store and pick up another one |
Post a vid clip if you can. Are you sure its coming from the passenger side?
It could be a small exhaust leak or even a spark plug slightly backed out. A bad lifter is very loud and distinguishable and that doesnt sound like your problem. |
|
When did this start to happen, and was it all of a sudden? Have you checked the plugs and wires to make sure everything is tight and seated?
|
it started maybe thursday, and yeah all of a sudden, at first i thought it was the trans bc of when i'd hear it, but now i'm sure it isnt. i havent checked all off the plugs/wires, i'm waiting till it cools off more before i try to get at that back one
|
Does the ticking ONLY come on with higher rpm, or is it still there at idle? Have you ruled out the possibility of the air gasket leaking?
Pull the wires and reach back and check to make sure the plugs are seated tight. let us know how that goes so we can start to rule some things out. |
immmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
are all the ''wires'' in ther right spot???????????:!:
|
its only noticeable at high rpms, when standing by it idling i cant even hear it
the wires are in their right spots, the only spark plug i was unable to get to was that blasted back one >.< i was going to take off the valve cover and see if i could see anything there, but its getting dark now and i'm still getting accustomed to the cramped working space |
Rule out exhaust leaks before getting under the valve covers.
When I had an ls1 lifter go bad, I could hear it at idle. The ticking got progressively worse over about a week of daily driving, and it was very loud. Like you coul hear the car from down the street. Hopefully that doesnt happen to you. If you can get a buddy help, unbolt the valve cover then hook the coil packs back up. have your friend hold the packs above the rockers and start up the engine and give it a little rev to see if the noise is louder/coming from the rockers. Dont do it too long though because you'll shoot oil everywhere. If you cant determine if its a bad rocker, time to pull them off. Check the needle bearings on the rockers, and pull the pushrods. Roll the pushrods over a mirror to check for bends. |
Wow, that sounded really strange. It could be the AIR tube gasket where it connects to the header, it could be the AIR check valve going bad or the AIR hose is loose or cracked. It really sounds exhaust related like the AIR or EGR. I've had the AIR check valves go bad on a couple of 4th gens and it basically lets the exhaust go back through to the AIR pump. I would check the exhaust stuff before taking too much time with the plugs/wires or rockers.
Also check the pcv hose where it connects to the throttle body to make sure none of the hose is cracked. |
I agree that seems weird. Might be time for the good old listen through a piece of heater hose trick to pinpoint the noise.
|
i'm busy with school so i havent been able to spend a lot of time on it. though the other day i listened around to see if anything on the exhaust is loose under the car, and there isnt. i did the screwdriver hearing test and it is not coming from under the valve cover.

what filter are you running? could be the legendary fram filter ticker
