Recent article on the rise of 3rd Gens WORTH!
Here is a quote from a recent AutoWeek article.
"Enthusiast daily drivers are showing signs of life. Third-Gen F-bodies and aero Mustang GTs are going up in value. According to anecdotal evidence, eBay auction results and the Hagerty price guide, none of these cars are the bargain used beaters they were just three years ago. Nice examples can still be had for less than $10K (and trashed ones a third of that), but THE SURVIVORS, always rare, have been steadily climbing over the past 18 months." I have noticed over the last few years, that my 1991 Formula is usually the ONLY 3rd Gen in the show. People come up to me and say "Hey I remember when I had an F-Body like that", but now mostly all of them have been reduced to beaters and the really nice ones are FEW and far between. I didn't start out to make my '91 Bird a show car, but after 5 years on the road, I just garaged it due to a rough Winter and that's where it has stayed. Who would have bought that type of Camaro/Firebird brand new back then and thought, you know what, I should just put this in storage and in 20+ years it might be worth what I paid for it! |
Still will be ugly turd gens.

Only the birds looked cool
|
I totally get the same response, about folks having them when they were younger, etc. at shows ed.
|
i wish i got got to hit more shows than i do, but the ones im at, the response is very similar to yours.."wow, i remember those, used to have one in the 80s" "wow, its in great shape, every one ive seen recently is trashed beyond belief" etc..
a rise in market value doesnt excite me too much, however, I am glad that actual enthusiast appreciation is rising with it. 3rd gen over the forgettable 4th gen anyday in my book. (with the exception of the 98-02 ram air TA) |
my favorite camaro is a 91/92 z. That tall wing looks sick. I love the third gens, and if you gave me a choice between a nice 91/92 gta or a nice 01/02 ws6 I might just have to choose the gta.
|
yeah the 91-92 gta's are the pinnacle/best looking of the 3rd gen birds IMO, whereas I feel the 85-87 Irocs were the best looking camaros. i was never into the tall wing, or the grooved/slotted ground effects of the later 3rd gens.
with the 4th gens, the only style i truely loved was the 98-02 ram air ta's. not that i hated the others, but never really cared for them either, regardless of their performance..they always lacked the style the 3rd gens had IMO. |
Only cool thing about the 91-92 gtas were the tail lights. Front bumpers are ugly

I'm always in the market for 3rd gens and I do think that the values have moved up in the last 2 years. In fact, the GTA I bought in 9/12 would be about $1,500 more today than I paid easily.
I think some of that may be spillover from the monstrously overvalued musclecar market where everything has gone up into the stratosphere. When people are paying big $ for disco 2nd gens, you know the 3rd gens are getting some attention too. Personally, I don't mind paying good money for a great condition car that has something going for it (L98, LB9 5speed, L69 5 speed...). But when L03 basket cases on the market for $4k, the fixer uppers are too high - why would you pay $4k for a car that needs $8k worth of work to sell for $7k? People must be on some serious medical ganja lately. |

Couldn't agree with you more |
I am happy that I was able to get 10k for my 92 Camaro last November. It was sold to a guy in Texas. I wish I could have gotten more but its inline with what the market is getting.

LMFAO how did you know?........ j/k Haha I never met the guy. I talked to him on the phone but He basically brought the car sight unseen. He wanted to drive up here and drive it home but things didn't work out that way and he had it shipped home.

I like the 91/92 ground effects too...as well as the wings on the 91/92 gta's. To me, they did just enough when phasing out the 3rd gen body style to make it timeless.
|
That's a gorgeous car. 4th gens are next to rise up in value

Holy hell that is most likely the nicest example of a Third Gen I've seen on this site. You should feel proud. Just out of curiosity since were talking about Third Gen pricing...how much would it take for you to part with that beast? |
