WTB- driveshaft bit - BOUGHT

Im not sure what this part is called but its the joint that connects the two driveshafts together. Not the one connecting to the tranny or diff but the one in the middle. Seems that no autopart store carries the middle one. Oh and its for a 95 Firebird 3.4 5spd.

Just replace it with a one piece shaft, any 4th Gen shaft will work (3rd gen too for that matter). I can't remember if you need to remove that mounting piece on the torque arm though, I am sure someone else will remember.

do u know where i could get one. and is there any benefits to the one piece?

sweetbmxrider 06-18-2009 08:58 PM

just look in the classifieds here and on ls1tech and such

JSPERFORMANCE 06-18-2009 10:27 PM

The benefit is less weight on the rotating mass of the drivetrain and faster acceleration due being able to get more net power to the wheels. Your best bet is to buy JSP's driveshaft, thats cheaper than I sell them for.

PM sent. im probabaly gonna do the swap in my driveway. is there anything specfic i need to know before i start

sweetbmxrider 06-19-2009 10:21 AM

if you raise the rear and throw it on jack stands, chock the wheels so it doesn't roll around. put the car in neutral. 4 11mm bolts hold the u joint into the rear. remove them and pull it out of the tranny (some fluid may come out). the tranny is splined but since its in neutral, you will be able to spin the new driveshaft till it lines up with the rear.

i am uncertain if there are any tricks or different things to unbolt with the old driveshaft though. use your head and you should be ok.

ya i dont have enough jackstands to lift it so im gonna use cinder blocks. at what points under the car can i put the blocks

take the wheels off and set the drums down on top the blocks

thunder 06-19-2009 04:35 PM

just straight on the brake drums?

NastyEllEssWon 06-19-2009 04:46 PM

aint gonna hurt nothing

BonzoHansen 06-19-2009 04:48 PM

Cement blocks break. Borrow jack stands.

sweetbmxrider 06-19-2009 05:48 PM

you only need two....

thunder 06-19-2009 07:57 PM

i actually ended up using stone pavers cause my friend at Settin Stone had some laying around. but i dont wanna put the back drums on blocks cause i wanna be able to rotate the driveshaft so i can actually position it. where else can i put the blocks

NastyEllEssWon 06-19-2009 09:20 PM

yeah if you take the outer drum cover off just the hub will spin

thunder 06-21-2009 01:53 PM

ok so the the car is up and i have enough room to get my fat self under there. I got the old shaft out and the new one is an exact match(got one from a junkyard). however the damn thing just doesnt wanna go into the tranny. The end is a bit rusted could that be the cause and if so will scraping it down do any good.

camaro2you 06-21-2009 02:25 PM

the end should be clean and have some oil on it to properly slide into the tail of the tranny and not destroy the seal.

NastyEllEssWon 06-21-2009 03:50 PM

yeah clean the end up pretty good...a bit of oil never hurt like mentioned before....also im pretty sure it might matter depending auto/manual trans

thunder 06-21-2009 04:12 PM

i dunno if it came from a manual or auto but the looks identical, counted the teeth and everything. ive spent a good bit of time scraping the rust out of the grooves 2. and ya lots of grease and wd40.

NastyEllEssWon 06-21-2009 04:18 PM

spin it around a few times...it doesnt go all the way in but should slide in when lined up properly

thunder 06-21-2009 04:39 PM

ya ive been spinning it and it doesnt slide in. i can get in as far as the bit that sticks out of the tranny but after that i probably get no more than a quarter inch

sweetbmxrider 06-21-2009 05:43 PM

have you tried to place it in the pinion?

thunder 06-21-2009 08:01 PM

Hey guys thanks so much for the support. i mean it. It started raining on me but i stayed under the car till it got done. the solution was alot of grease and a big hammer. haha what cant u fix with a hammer

NastyEllEssWon 06-22-2009 03:08 AM

when finesse fails use force  :nod:
