Ignition stuff, give me a heads up
I'm looking to buy some ignition stuff...distributor, coil, wires...
if someone could give me a heads up as to what is good to use with my setup, id appreciate it. i need specifics though...i dont know what will work and what wont...I was thinking MSD 8.5 superconductors, blaster 2 coil, and no idea what distributor (i cant find one for a good price)....like i said, even with the stuff ive listed, i dont know which part number works with my car. it will be a 350 tpi. thanks. |

Stock distributor in good shape, good 8mm MSD or Accel wires, and the Blaster coil would be fine.

-I personally wouldnt watse my time on a balster coil unless the original one died, but its only 30 bucks so its not a total waste if you want to go ahead and get it.
-AC Delco plugs are fine, dont bother with the bosch +4's or whatever else is out. -the wires like justin said -I never noticed anything special about the MSD cap and rotor, except they are red, I just used your standard parts store replacement. -If your feeling really saucy, then go get the MSD billet distributor. And toss in a 6AL box while your at it .. :) |
i dont know which wires to get or which blaster coil from jegs. beings they have part numbers for a bajillion applications and none of them are very specific...could you guys tell me which ones from jegs or summit will work with my vehicle?

Don't bother upgrading anything on the ignition with a 350 and TPI. TPI will keep you below 6000rpm and you're not running 500+hp so the spark will be plenty strong enough.
The best upgrade is wires. Since you are running EFI don't go with solid core wires. I recommend any good set of 8mm thick spiral core wires from a name brand. That would be my only upgrade. My dizzy is almost 190k miles old and it's still "tight." Replaced the cap and rotor about 5 years ago but only 40k miles. The ignition boxes do help with emissions and gas milage so if you're looking to put money somewhere other than the wires go with an MSD 6A or 6AL. Now to go all out I'd go with CNP but there isn't any easy way to go about fitting that setup onto your engine. |

You could grab those Accel's for $40, and get some sort of heat shielding for them.

I use spiral core accel wires now. The $40 8mm black variety ever since my MSD's burned up... twice. What's most important is keeping the wires away from heat because once the insolation is gone the path of least resistance is NOT the spark plug but instead the header or valve cover, etc. So just make certain the new wires don't come close to headers.
Also, the coils are a waste of money. If you want to upgrade the energy at the plug then get a higher amp ignition module. Still not worth the $$ for a v8. The MSD box is good for high horsepower large gap (only needed with crappy heads) high compressiong engines that rev above 6000rpm. Keep it below that and the inductive spark will work great. |
