T56 noise

after racing last night im starting to get alot of "whirring" noise from my transmission when its in gear over like 2k rpms...and the noise increases with rpms...do i need a new trans?

Fasterthanyou 08-18-2005 12:30 PM

Sounds like it could use a rebuild. That noise isn't good, especially if it gets louder.

Tru2Chevy 08-18-2005 12:33 PM

Yea....does it do it in every gear, or just certain ones?

every gear...i guess theres no way its just a clutch eh?

You might have overheated the fluid too. Try draining the tranny and refilling with some good quality ATF. It's cheaper than a rebuild, and easy enough to do. Might get you some more miles out of it. :)

NJSPEEDER 08-18-2005 06:04 PM

royal purple makes a manual tranny fluid that is intended specifically for manuals that use ATF. little g uses the stuff and his tranny seems to like it

Anything that says ATF on the outside. If you need that extra 1/4 of a horsepower (if that), then go with the best, Royal Purple or Amsoil. Both are synthetic so be sure they are ATF!

how much does that crap cost? cuz i dont feel like spending too much cash on fluid if im gunna get the trans rebuilt in a month anyway

Fastbird 08-19-2005 08:01 AM

If you want some ATF that's not going to break the bank, go to a Honda dealership and get their ATF. Good stuff, a lot of guys on CZ28 were raving about it a while back.

j0n 08-19-2005 12:13 PM

cool thanks...ill go get some today

j0n 08-30-2005 01:00 AM

yea so i changed the tranny fluid but i kept driving the car like a *******...so the noise is just getting louder and now the car starts slipping every time i shift...i need money dammit :? (for a new trans)

Ian 08-30-2005 06:04 AM

manual transmissions dont slip. clutches slip.

Pampered-Z 08-30-2005 09:12 AM

Does the sound change when you push in the clutch? Â*T/O bearing maybe? Â*

Service manual listed the following for noise ( from the trans, not the clutch):

Low or improper fluid.

Worn/damaged Speed-O gear

Worn/damaged bearings.

Improper bellhousing alignment or lose bellhousing.

As others mentioned, change the fluid ( 4 quarts ) and make sure all the bolts are tight.

I've used Redline ATF in my cars for years with no problem.

Slow-V6 08-30-2005 01:57 PM

Trannys suck..

Slow-V6 08-30-2005 01:57 PM

Try using a quart of Lucas or Gm syncro mesh and the rest of the quarts use atf..

j0n 08-30-2005 02:52 PM

i just changed the trans fluid...im getting sick and tired of this damn thing...im just gunna get the whole thing rebuilt with a new clutch....its gunna suck to fork over that kinda money but then at least i know its done and will be all set for as long as i own the car

Ian 08-30-2005 07:59 PM

you wouldn't have this problem if you didn't drive the car like ronnie sox!

Tru2Chevy 08-30-2005 11:22 PM

What kinda clutch are you gonna go with?

- Justin
