Tru2Chevy 09-02-2005 08:39 AM

Oooooo - It's purdy! That timing chain cover has to be worth at least 15 hp.

then how did you go 11s on a 400shot?

camaroracer1992 09-02-2005 01:21 PM

1st off i wasnt on a 400 shot at the nats, it was only a 75 and was running on the first stage. 2nd the fuel pump wasnt putting the pressure out liek it should and my safety switch was cutting the ground out going down the strip.

90FormulaWS6 09-03-2005 11:25 PM

There is some bad news. It's not terrible, just disheartening.
The long and the short of it (pun intended) is that long flat tap pushrods (7.8") were installed instead of the shorter roller versions (7.2"). What this does is nothing... unless the slot in the rocker arms isn't large enough. The end result is a 5 broken studs and a bunch bent but all are trashed from the rocker cutting into the side of the stud.
When I arrived at 4:45 this was all a mystery but the valve covers were off. Within 10 minutes of thinking the mystery was solved... then all hell broke loose and we tore into the engine again. By 7:30 the engine was torn down to short block without using any air tools. Some blood and no beer (store closed) later j0n showed up and it's now out of the road.
It looks like the studs need replacing, definatly the pushrods (all bent), and maybe rockers. Other than that, some fluids and gaskets will bring this back up and running.
I'll let Derek post his plans. I think it's just a matter of getting the heads fixed and new pushrods/gaskets.

90FormulaWS6 09-04-2005 10:10 PM

so basically what prevo said only im ****ing hardcore stressed after 3 days of laboring my ass off i have to pull the top off again and start anew... this time the ****er is going to be right ... the wrong pushrods were installed and it caused the rockers to dig into the studs... the studs became weak from the grooves and the pressure made them snap... thankfully and hopefully no damage to the bottom end... anyway plans are as follows(these might be a little detailed b/c this is also a to do list for myself)...

1. drain oil and get all the parts together that i need such as head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets throttle body gaskets, intake manifold

2. take the heads to the machine shop and get the studs pulled and replaced with screw in studs

3. reinstall the rocker arms + the heads and set the lash w/ the right pushrods

4. install the performer rpm intake(after modding it to fit  )

5. distributor

6. install new throttle body w/ AFPR + 90# injectors and attach fuel lines (upper @ TB)

7. fuel lines (lower lines), power steering(hoses + fluid), coolant, oil

8. Bolt on headers

9. Rewire the engine compartment (grounds on heads)

If anyone sees anything im forgetting let me know b/c if you dont ill figure it out when i do all this ****

qwikz28 09-04-2005 10:27 PM

They're still working on it. They got my adaptor, your intake, the only thing I didn't ask is if they had perim bolt valve covers! I know he's got the centerbolt ones but these are the older 416 heads which I believe are perim.
I think Derek cut his finger all to **** and the CTS sensor doesn't fit in the new intake. Other than that the heads are on and they're putting it back together. Should be running tomorrow.

skorpion317 09-06-2005 12:21 AM

if gas wasn't so damn expensive, i'd drive down and lend a helping hand, both in rebuilding the engine and drinking those 40s

90FormulaWS6 09-06-2005 12:38 AM

ok so here we are at 130 am all cleaned up and ****... were not done YET... but weve made some more progress... first and foremost thanks to tim, jon prevost, and j0n for all the help (well get there one day) lol

but heres the update for all that dont know what went down today... i bought a new set of heads off of this guy tim in north plainfield... i stripped the heads to bare castings and cleaned them, then rebuilt them w/ the springs off the 081 head and put new seals on them. after that tim stopped by with parts (intake manifold, AFPR, and pushrods. j0n and i then went to prevo's house to get the TBI adaptor for the manifold which was an interesting drive to say the least b/c j0n has no high beams and the roads were PITCH black. anyway we got back and started bolting **** up. We installed the heads (where my extension decided to break while tightening the heads @ 80ft/lb and slammed on the firewall and gave me a pretty good cut). j0n then tightened the rest of the heads while i stopped blood from gushing out of my finger. then headers, and intake manifold+throttle body was placed onto the gaskets and finger tightened, we then installed the correct pushrods. we finger tightened the rockers and thats where were at... the "to do" list for tomorrow is as follows:

1. torque the intake manifold + figure out all the fittings
2. dizzy
3. valve lash
4. install coil
5. vacuum lines
6. power steering and fuel lines
7. coolant and oil
8. accessory brackets
9. spark plugs + wires
10. wire it up
11. pray + start car

i dont think i have anything else to do... like i said before if it seems as though i forgot something then let me know

pic of where were at now:
