aftermarket steering wheel

is it illegal to but an aftermarket wheel on an airbag equipt car. will it pass inspection?

Savage_Messiah 02-09-2006 03:44 PM

Well, I just passed it with my air bag light on... of course they couldnt see that the pass. side dash is empty and that the airbag module isnt there...

Ian 02-09-2006 05:45 PM

I'm not sure, I'll ask tomorrow.

and kasey, why the hell did you take your airbags out?

Savage_Messiah 02-09-2006 05:50 PM

Well they blew in the accident... never were plugged in since then... so i said f it, they caused me more harm than good. Only reason drivers side is still there is appearance...

Brando56894 02-09-2006 11:36 PM

Savage_Messiah 02-10-2006 02:29 AM

as in not having a huge gaping hole in my wheel, I don't think THAT woulda gotten thru inspection

It's a temp thing... don't worry...

4th gen airbags weigh ~42 lbs. Little G doesn't have any in his car either....

4th gen airbags...42 pounds, cracking your head open on the windshield the next time you get into an accident to cut that 1/4 time by 1/20 of a second...PRICELESS

If anyone besides Koll or Goofy can manage to touch a 4th gen windsheild with their head while they are seatbelted in the car, I'll give them a dollar.

ps - that was a joke.

Teds89IROC 02-10-2006 02:23 PM

ok, lets change the scenario..how about simply hitting the steering wheel, or dash board and busting up your face. My point is I think it's dumb to remove your airbags on a daily driver to shave 42 pounds. For an all out drag strip car or one hardly driven on the street, fine.

~Ted

EDIT: My priceless line was a joke too, but I really do feel removing airbags on a DD isn't worth the risk it can cause 8-)

Injuneer 02-10-2006 02:49 PM

Weight savings for the steering wheel replacement was 20#:

+100,000. Sorry, my dander gets up when I hear safety being cut. It’s childish, IMO.

Earnhardt's head hit the steering wheel, not the windshield. Go ahead and google, you will find a pic of his bloody, bent steering wheel. Here is a shot of Steve Chryssos' 68 Camaro, after an accident. Note the wheel part of the steering wheel is missing. (his car now)

I know guys take the safety bars out of the doors to save 40 pounds, not realizing or caring they are a major part of the car's safety cage. Or half ass roll bars & passengers in the back.

Also, if you are taking an airbag discount and the ins company finds out you disabled them, you are technically committing fraud. And, if you get in an accident, removal of a safety device can give them cause to deny claim.

Just my $.02 regarding street cars.

What he said.

I just have liability anyway, they don't look or care.

How many people are driving around airbagless 3rd gens as their daily driver... but that's fine because it didnt come with them from the factory?

I do suppose it's all a personal decision but I don't think it's that big of a deal.

BonzoHansen 02-11-2006 05:33 PM

I agree SM, it is a personal decision. But I would still never remove safety items. That would be like converting a car back to drum brakes.

And if & when you sell it, you better have the new owner sign a paper stating they know there are no airbags. If you can't prove they knew the bags were gone, and they eat the wheel in an accident, you open yourself for a huge lawsuit. Life sucks and people will try to screw you. No doubt.

Thats different, I have no airbags because the car didn't come with them, my 92 had them though. We're talking about removing safety items from the car that came equiped with them, not driving around in a car that never came with them.

Can't and won't sell it, anyway, after my accident... the only person who would buy this thing now would be Paul and I wouldn't sell it to him cuz it'll be chopped up
