Welding Question
 

So I've never done any welding on a car before. What do I have to do so I don't melt all my wires or burn up the ECU? Do I just have to disconnect the battery?

Disconnect the battery for sure. Make sure ANYTHING that can catch fire is as out of the way as you can get it. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and (if you've got one) keep a garden sprayer pressurized and filled with water to take care of flare-ups.

also try to keep the ground clamp as close to what you're welding as possible. you dont want all that electrical current to have to travel across things like bearings or other important pieces.

i agree with what they said...careful if your welding to the floors..you could be melting the rug/interior

When I was at school, a kid was welding SFC's into his 88 IROC and he caught his carpet on fire :lol:

luckily for him he was replacing it anyway.

Actually, I plan on welding to the floor, on the interior so I'm gonna have all that going on. :)

cheap insurance: if you cant remove the carpet, keep it wet. also try to keep in mind that there will be sparks so be sure to keep flamable and easily damage-able things away from the area you'll be working on.

make sure the ground and positive is disconnected, because if your ground from the welder is not grounded good it will find's it's own from the battery. plus don't weld all in one place, tack weld the floor in in different spots then weld on the floor so it doesn't warp. JR1.

Well, I'll have to set me carpet on fire some other time, turns out I don't need to weld. Thanks for all the advice though. It will come in handy for when I do need to weld when ever that may be.

Maybe I'll weld something to my car just for the hell of it :)

when i welded the SFC's on robs car, I took wet rags and wrapped them around the fuel lines. Then kept changing them as i went. I kept a bucket nearby...

because water is the best way to put out a fuel fire :lol:

wasnt to put out a fire, was to keep the heat off the lines.....

When welding an Audi, do you have to unplug the battery?

Depends if it is your Audi or not

I would call a reliable muffler shop and ask them or just disconnect to be safe. Never gamble with an Audi, I own two.

Are you welding with the battery?
