what to do with the motor after the season
after the race season im thinking of a few options. here are the ones im thinking.
1. keep my 355 and go a slightly larger cam, which at that time would be a roller cam 2. bore and stroke the 355 out to say a 427 with slightly higher comp and bigger cam 3. ram jet 502 4. sell all my small block stuff, and 700r4 race prepped trans and put a big block in it from shafiroff and a reverse manual th400 the one im looking at is here http://www.shafiroff.com/ultrastreet/540_675_engine.asp i want to do this cause frankly the 355 isnt much fun and id liek to be running 10 flats or high 9's on motor alone. |
get the mountain motor and lay the smack down on everyone!
|
I'm partial to a big small block. Easier to get a car to hook without so much weight on the front end.
Just remember Joe,the jump from mid 10's to single digits is an expensive one. I know first hand. LOL Lot's of broken parts and money spent on safety equiptment. At least you can learn from my mistakes. |

2. bore and stroke the 355 out to say a 427 with slightly higher comp and bigger YOU CANT GET THEIR WITH A STOCK 4 BOLT 355 BLOCK ?????? YOU NEED A TALL DECK ( BO TYE TYPE ) STROKER CLEARENCED AND A BIG HAND FULL OF CASH OUR 79 CAMARO WITH A 355 ON RACE GAS 2 SPEED BACKHALFED CAR RUNS 10;30S 130 MPH ALL ON MOTOR NO ADDDERS JZ |
john i have a dart little m block, it can be bored out and stroked much further then a stock 355 :)

Big-inch small block FTW!
Big blocks weigh too much Joe.... - Justin |
looks like a big inch small blockl ill have to start planning/talk to engine builders since mines out of businessif i go that route, ill be getting rid of my th700 and going with a th400 with a transbrake
|
acutally, I want to change my vote for big inch small block. I just remembered the big block vs small block race between an early second gen (small block) and a second gen nova (big block). small block won it.

I have built and raced both small and large the bigger a little motor becomes the more heat becomes a problem unless its on alky a large BBC with alloy heads and 9-1/2 to one will run on pump fuel well some times these days and will make up the difference in weight / power --- a special fuel large small block is a pain to control with heat and detonation / verses the power you get they need much more in the way of oil clearence rings rods and mains and a special anti cavation ( anti spark oil pump ) that limits your cam choices YET i have seen many 800-HP and more SBC motors some last and than theirs the others their is no Substitute for cubic inches the bigger the engine the less effort to go the same as a small real high effort combo its all in the numbers ( MATH ) my 2 cents for what its worth jz |
why stop at 427? theres a stroker kit that will get u 454ci
|
stroke that som bitch!

i say leave the motor and figure out why that turd doesn't leave harder. have you even made a pass on both stages yet?
|
the turd leaves hard on the nitrous!! 10.7@125 with a 1.4 60 time, i think my convertor doesnt stall high enough. i know on motor it doesnt launch hard so in turn this is affecting the nitrous launches to. im wondering if a th400 with a transbrake and a slightly higher stall with a roller cam would be good or not??
|
leave teh TC and cam, transbrakes are always a good idea, and time the second stage to come in at 1.5-1.6seconds. that should get you out of the hole at the limit and bring the second hit on as soon as you grab second gear :)
and if you want a trans to put a brake in i have access to a few powerglides :p |
A nutter vote for a big small block here!

Now, my 2 cents, if you still want to run pump gas, 434"-(4.155 bore,4" stroke,6"rod), 10.5 comp., big cam(nitrous roller), good flowing heads, th400, and it depends on the weight of car, at 3100lbs, mid. to low 10's,on motor, plus i don't know how much NOS you have, but there's always little speed secrets when building a motor. JR1.
Right now, I'm putting my 440"sbc back together, and hopefully be getting to Island on a Friday night to make some passes in two weeks mybe the 30th., cars painted and back together and only have little time before Maple Groves - NMCA's Fastest Street Cars in August 25,26,27th, hopefully i can get the car to go DOWN the track instead of UP!!!!. i changed alot of rear suspension parts.see you's on a friday.
