how much will my steel driveshaft slow me down?
how much will my steel driveshaft slow me down?
Im gonna go to atco on tuesday night with my drag radials, and was just curious. its noticeably heavier than my stock aluminum shaft was.. i should still be able to run faster right? |
i heard on ls1tech that no one has seen any gains/losses from swapping driveshafts. so i think you'll be good dood :)
|
Its just less rotating mass = rev faster. In effect it anything to reduce either the weight or rotating mass will help.
|
I have had both and I noticed 0 diffrence in acceleration, 1/4 mile et or 60'times. But the aluminum driveshaft sure does look nicer though.

One of my fellow racers has done the test, and the aluminum shaft is quicker.
In a 68' Chevelle, the stock steel shaft was compaired to a Denny's Aluminum driveshaft and the aluminum shaft was 4 hundreths quicker (0.04). This test was done on a car that sees typically 180-250 passes in a season of racing, and the results are accurate. If you can see it on the slip or not, if you add rotating mass, you're slowing your car down. Every Class racer and professional racing team looks to minimize rotating mass! You might consider a Denny's HD aluminum driveshaft, or Mark Williams. Since i'm building my car into a Stock Eliminator ride, and an aluminum driveshaft is illegal in my class (F/SA 295HP/350 67' camaro) i regretfully put a Nitrous Ready Steel shaft in my car which weighed 7lbs more then the stock one! |
Ill have to make up for it with some weld prostars in the future then, lol
4 hundreths isnt too bad for me, i thought it was gonna be like 4 tenths sacraficing .004 of a second for reassurance that my shaft wont twist or snap is well worth it IMO. |

not much depends on how much you've spent previously to find .04

whoops, added an extra zero in there, lol |
Hah, with my luck I would do this and run 12.03....and then be even more pissed that had I used my aluminum DS i woulda run 11.99
|
i was thinkin about switching mine out but since it doesnt seem to make that much of a difference, i might just pass it up and put the +/- $100 to something else
|
brandon, why would you need a stronger/lighter ds?

I sure as hell cant wait to get the 4speed in the Chevelle and tear my DS to pieces....

I am 98% sure it will be the correct length. I have the new yoke (sp?) though for my driveshaft. I also have to get solid UJoints. I know the Muncie and TH350 had the same length DS and From what I understand a Muncie and a ST10 are the same length.

As I was once told, worry about ounces and the pounds will come.

OK fine I heard it twice... I dont remember if Craig or Tim was the first to say it to me tho
|
A smart person told you that, hehe. If the difference from 11.03 and 10.99 was a driveshaft you'd kill to have it.
I'd much rather have .04 in my favor then working against me. |
