header question

I need to get rid of the stock headers. I have a leak in the passenger side header and i alooking for a good ones to put on. i am not looking for that much performance right now because i dont know what i am going to do to the car int he future. I also looking for something easy to install. i have a 305 TPI with A.I.R.

Shorties would bolt to the stock exhaust I think.

V 07-09-2006 11:55 PM

AFAIK, no 3rd gen header system bolts up to the stock y pipe, all setups require their own y pipe or a custom one.

BonzoHansen 07-10-2006 07:40 AM

Stock 3rd gen headers?

88jerseyiroc 07-10-2006 07:46 AM

Yea i dont want stock headers, i want aftermarket header system. I am just looking for which ones, best value for the buck and i guess including y pipe now :). just need some ideas, to pick one out and stuff

BonzoHansen 07-10-2006 07:48 AM

3rd gens has stock (as in OE/GM) headers? I thought they all had manifolds, except SLP cars.

Tru2Chevy 07-10-2006 08:58 AM

Hooker shorties would prolly be your best bet.

Do you have a stick & does that matter with short headers? I understand it, 2nd gens with sticks can’t use them, but the clutch linkage is mechanical in a 2nd gen and (I think) hydraulic in a 3rd – so maybe it doesn’t matter. Just asking.

V 07-10-2006 05:24 PM

all 3rd gen shorties pass under the oil pan and clear the clutch if stick, BUT no one that i could find makes a longtube header for a stick 3rd gen, the hydraulic slave is right in the way.

If you look for somethign , id suggest buy soemthign that comes with its own y pipe as well, i know flowtech says they have a 3rd gen f body y pipe, i tried modifying it for my monte but the flowtech "g body" headers themselves didnt even fit....so i dunno. most people dont like edelbrock, but they fit great, them or slp id suggest.

Hooker Shorties

This is what i was looking at with the above link, would that be best?

My car is auto, so i prob wont have that problem with the linkage for manual

Ian 07-10-2006 10:28 PM

I had SLP shorty headers on my 87 GTA (L98/auto). great fit, but I also had an aftermarket Y-pipe (I was told it was an SLP Y). I'm pretty sure anything that wasn't stock on my GTA was from SLP.

NJLT1SS 07-11-2006 06:38 PM

I had SLP shorties on my 89 GTA, they rocked!

88jerseyiroc 07-11-2006 06:45 PM

Yea well the SLP headers are a little too much money for me right now. I wish i could go with the SLP headers, maybe sometime in the future

I second that!

Third! stay away from flowtechs and used headers all together. Better off spending the extra cash for new headers. I learned the hard way. I dunno if you've come down the street at all Frank, but my car's on jackstands in the driveway awaiting hooker super comp long tubes. (and some paint/rust work lol)

haha i will take a ride down there tomorrow. mine is going to be dismantled because of the wiring harness lol. So it be stuck in my driveway lol.

camarorss350 07-30-2006 04:36 PM

so there are no LT's for a T-5 car? doesnt that blow.... always something.... what would it take to get LT's to fit?

JSPERFORMANCE 07-31-2006 07:56 AM

If you are looking for a long tube to fit a specific application call Lemon's headers, they make everything custom.. As far as shorties go I would reccomend MAC or Hooker headers.

camarorss350 08-02-2006 12:42 AM

im pretty sure LT's are useless unless im making big numbers....

hardline_42 08-02-2006 10:25 AM

I've got some 3rd gen Summit / Dynomax shorty headers still in the box for sale in the Classifieds section.

00454sscamaro 08-06-2006 03:34 PM

weird my headers on my 84 m5 fit.... they rubbed and were a bitch and a half to get in but they were on there... i think they were headman's not sure though. i bought flowtechs before the headmans they didnt even come close to fitting, had to return them. the 3 bolt connections are worthless imo though i had 2 nuts on each bolt still they didnt hold.
