Sign Language
Anyone taught themselves sign before? None of the local colleges offer a sign language course. My grad school does not offer it (which would have been ideal). And it would be useful for me in my career to know sign language (I have occasionally worked with non verbal children, and will work with them more and more...learning and teaching them to sign would be ideal). So, anyone taught themselves? I'd like to use a CD ROM or DVD based program so I can see the signs, not just look at them in print. I've gone through amazon.com to see what I could find, but they all have mixed reviews.
If it helps, I already know most of the alphabet, and I know simple words such as more, all done, juice/drink, eat, bathroom, please, thank you, cut, hug etc; ie mostly need based words. I can put some sentences together, but mostly "I am..." or "I want..." Any suggestions? |

i took an adult sign language class in lodi or fairlawn a couple years ago... i wud try there. its a night class like twice a week or something. my grandmother took it with me. so that we could raise my cousin to speak before he could actually talk. made life a lot easier. but we only took the first level class. i think theres 3 or 5 levels. and thats not tooo far from u. if i talk to my grandmother ill try to get the number and exact town... if she remembers... but like i said its considered adult education for either lodi or fairlawn but im almost postitive it was fairlawn. and it was at the middle school. that much i remember.... hope that helps lol...

Bergen I think offers it, but I can't find a listing of the days it's offered so I can judge whether it's feasible. But I also don't live in Bergen County, so I'll be paying more to take the course. Oh well. Going to stop by Barnes and Noble and see what they have. I get a discount since I work in a public school, so that will help. |
www.nad.org (national association of the deaf) should be able to point you towards something.
