Ford Mustang GT500: Performance Flop
A lot of people think the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro duel has been the most exciting rivalry in the history of cars. Others think of it as the automotive equivalent of a People magazine cover story on Jessica Simpson — it’s a worn-out story, but you give it a look anyway.
By now you know that GM no longer makes Camaros, so our ritual is in limbo. (The Camaro’s obvious stand-in, the Aussie-born Pontiac GTO, is about to join the Oldsmobile lineup on the discontinued heap.) But Ford has not called it quits in the muscle-car department and has in fact produced the 2007 Shelby GT500, which is not only the most powerful Mustang ever made — 500 horsepower — but also the most expensive at $41,950, including destination. So without a Camaro, the Corvette, which lists at $44,490 and comes packed with 400 horsepower, becomes the obvious crosstown challenger. More at the link... http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...avy-pedal.html ---------------------------------------------------- Sad, sad sad.....I remember when people talked about the GT500 before it came out, how it was going to trump the Z06. There was a better contest with the Charger SRT8 then the C6. |
i saw on ls1tech one guy dynoed a gt500 stock at like 420 at the wheels. 420 x 15% = 63. 63 + 420 does not equal 500. what a joke. the car is listed at almost 200hp more then my ls1 and my lid/catback ls1 was only 90whp shy of it? give me a break

Yup, the GT500 is pretty pathetic...There is nothing about that car that would make me want one.
|
ill take an 03/04 cobra instead, i like it more.
|
:stupid:

For the cash, Id rather spend it on a C6. Better performance, much better look, and better gas milage.
|
it is typical of ford more than any other car company to create a media frenzy by talking up performance and features, then delivering a less than stellar piece.
i would like ot see a performance test against a GTO, since it would be a much more similar market comparison to the GT500 in price and target audience. the only real difference would be the bit of power the GTO would be giving up, and with the history of GM under estimating power ratings, i don't think that would be much of a difference. |

besides the front bumper and wheels looks the same to me, still fugly. but like i said its all my opinion. i wouldnt buy a gto.
|
i would take the smooth lines of the GTO over the wanna-be throwback look of the mustang.
|
I'd take a goat over a new stang no question about it. I like the fact that the GTO isn't edgy looking or retro. Its just like the old gto's, take a plain jane car and stuff a big motor in it.
I think I saw an 07 GT500 when I was driving to the wedding reception yesterday. it was white with blue stripes just like the one in the link and it had the cobra emblems on the fenders. |
