Installing a 95 LT1 Cam into an L98

Does anyone have any write-ups? What are the differences? What would need to change, or be adapted to run it?

The car is an 89 IROC w/ 121k miles.

Any tips or advise would be appreciated!

The dowel pin on the front of the LT1 cam needs to be changed or shaved by a machine shop. It's too long and will probably poke through the timing cover. Other than that, it should slide right in. Go nice and easy, don't nick the journals and put plenty of motor oil on it to make it easier.

Is there enough of a difference between the L98 cam and LT1 cam to warrant a swap in the first place?

There is a difference, but not huge. Fresh valve springs are a plus, but not 100% needed.

IIRC the specs on the two cams are pretty close together and the difference would be minimal and possibly not even noticable

That's not a roller cam.

These are numbers I came up with from a quick search....

'89 L98 cam specs: .415/.430 207/213 117.0 LSA
'95 LT1 cam specs: .447/.459 205/207 117.0 LSA

The LT1 stock cam is actually very close to the old Comp-U-Cam grind.
(think is was called the 4020 or 4040 cam?).

What makes them nice for the TPI motors are A) they give a nice gain in the mid range and slight upper RPM range and still stay emmisiions legal. B ) You can get them for dirt cheap compared to a new cams price.

If you want the max out of the motor then there are better options, but for the price it's not a bad mod.
