going one step further...

This is just an early showing of whats in store for my SS, well under hood appearence. Now that the motor was out and almost ready to go back in, i wanted to focus on the engine compartment as well. After stripping just about everything out of the engine compartment(all parts to be cleaned and detailed) i then cleaned everything up and prepped it. Right now i am just about ready to paint it tomorrow. Instead of the factory primer and base only, i'm going one step further and doing a clear coat. Since some spots in the old paitn rubbed through, everything will be getting coated with an epoxy primer first then the Light Pewter metallic base, and finally a few coats of clear. I removed the emissions sticker and belt routing decal to do a better job without maskign around them, and i have already ordered those decals and they will be getting put back. With the air lid, i have a TSP lid, but it will be getting the factory airbox sticker on it to give it a semi-factory look, just something i personally wanna do. The lower airbox will also be getting painted body color. Tonight i cleaned it up and sanded it down and that'll be getting sprayed tomorrow as well. This will be my first time painting but i have to learn sometime and i have consulted several sources including the paint shop, and i have a very good idea of what im doing so it shoudl work out good. here are some pics of the car currently and the lower air box....i'l also post pics after paint...

looks good man

*edit* u think about polishing anything valve covers ect or some frc's?

heres a quick shot of the motor, TB(crooked cuz its not really bolted on) is still getting sent out for porting, and the frc's will be getting the "corvette" filled and "Camaro SS" airbrushed on instead. The powdercoated accesory brackets, TB, and fuel rail were done by Paul(HardcoreZ28 ) and came out great.

Paul...looks like you've got it prepped pretty good. Here's the best advice I can give you....GO SLOW. And by that I don't mean gun speed...I mean with laying material down. Primer and clear have a tendency to run very easy especially in an engine bay. Go with light coats especially the first one or two and let them flash for a good 10 minutes or so before the next one. if you get a run it'll be a pain in the ass to sand and buff after if it's in a corner in there. Other than that it should look good. Let me know how it goes.

should get an EWP on that thing while its not in the car yet.

primer is done, next is the base color... but first im getting something to eat, drying time should be done by then.

SWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! I'm liking the work, I gotta drive by one day and see it in person.

Knipps 10-18-2006 03:44 PM

Can't wait to see it finished...

ar0ck 10-18-2006 05:38 PM

Dam so far it looks really nice. I can't wait to see a finished product!

V 10-18-2006 06:40 PM

...and now base color is done...it is pewter (just looks silver in the pic). Now i gotta wait 20-25 min to apply the clear...

Oh, and for comparison, here is what the engine compartment looked like factory... you can sorta notice the pewter on the fenders and it looks odd with the "gray" engine bay.

Well, i got the clear done, time for it to dry. But i must say, it looks pretty good, especially considering it was my first time paiting. You cant really tell the clear in the pics though, but in the second and 3rd pics, you can see some light reflecting up. In person it looks way better. And, its not meant to be a mirror finish either, i just wanted something a bit nicer than factory.

Now its time for me to debate on doing my engine bay over again, not with a spray can this time even though i did a great job, or waiting till next year when i redo the drivetrain again and let my painter do it.
