Frozen Balancer & Hub!
I need a little advice here.
The stock balancer off this 94 LT1 that I have is frozen to the Crank hub. I soaked it with some Liquid Wrench, and tommorow I am going to get some PB Blaster. But what happens if I can't get it off? Before on my 95, the balancer came off clean because I already had a crank pulley on the car so the bolts were fresh. But this whole thing is stuck. I tried to get a puller in there but I relized the bolts that came in the kit are the wrong ones so I can't even pull the whole balancer and crank hub off at the same time. I tried to hammer it off but that did absolutely nothing and I don't want to damage anything. Any suggestions? http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...Picture022.jpg http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e3...Picture021.jpg |
pull the whole thing off with a crow's foot puller...get the bolts from home depot they're open till 10

Or rent the puller tool from Autozone. That one works great!

use the right tool for the job. you mentioning that you used a hammer made me cringe.

look on some of the boards and find out what the correct thread pitch is, then go to lowes/home depot and get some grade 8 bolts.
with the correct tool it will prolly come right off. |
heating it up with MAPP gas also helps but the seal might bite it -- and as said above the correct puller is the only way shot of a hot wrench hahahahahha -- jz

Get the right bolts, use a puller. |
Use heat and PB Blaster. When it heats up the PB Blaster will get sucked in between the 2 pieces of metal and eventually break loose. I did this on a turbo I had to take apart and on the parking brake lever on my 4Runner that was just rusted into place. I use a heat gun, you don't want any type of torch or open flame on the balancer.

I just used a harmonic balancer puller on my pulley and it came off.
Dont forget if your pulling the crank hub off, you need to put a thin bolt (like a allen head bolt) in the hole first, then put the puller on or else you will get no where on that |
How do I get the entire crank to stop rotating when Im trying to get the assembly off using a puller? I think the balancer & hub is one peice as well. I am so confused. Theres no signs of it where it "should" seperate. Im too knew for this and have no idea what to do at this point.

Use a 1/2 drive impact gun, it will be alot easier than trying to turn a ratchet or wrench. Set it on the lowest torque setting and work your way up, and go slow with it. She will break it loose and you wont be fighting against yourself. |
you could have someone else hold the flywheel in place with a flywheel turner while you crank away on the bolts. or if you still have the heads on, put all the spark plugs in and losen all the rocker arms. good luck turning the motor over then
