for a 91/92 RS? Should be a plug connected to the sensor that goes in the tail shaft of the trans, the gear which gets affixed to that sensor (driven gear) should hopefuly be meshing with the gear on the output shaft (drive gear) if the drive gear wasnt slid back properly on that clip which goes on the output shaft it may not be meshing properly with the drive gear, or the sensor isint seating properly, id look into that first, when you say "cable" you dont mean like an old school cable drivin spedo, on a 91/92???
