Woah, calm down there, Im being serious, Gm paint sucks, especially since its old, and depending on what factory you got your car from it could be worse, and you dont want to just do something and then think its fixed and then get a cheap paint job later.

ask me how I know..

Kid Racer 01-26-2007 09:20 PM

iight im sorry...so how u know...

i got my paint job at maaco and it was the second bigest mistake i made with my car. Just cause you have some peeling clear doesnt mean you need a new paint job, though take care of whats good, go to borders and look for an automotive detailing book, sit down and read it get some ideas then right them down, and go put the book back. just take it slow.

GM really blew it with paint jobs back in da 80s. I bought a Z24 brand new in '87, and the paint was shot in no time. :-x

The fire was the best thing that ever happened to that car!

JL8Jeff 01-27-2007 09:41 AM

GM paint really was lousy in the 80's. I looked at many Monte Carlo SS cars that were silver and the paint was shot and usually the black ones were too. I would take your car to a shop and see what they say. If the area where the clear coat is missing is damaged too much by the sun then your best option might be for a new paint job.

deadtrend1 01-28-2007 12:59 PM

The clear coat just peeled off my 91 turd. It was horrible......

transmaro93 01-28-2007 08:25 PM

once the clear peels and just leaves raw basecoat your probably not gonna get it to shine againand if you leave it like that for an extended period of time lets say a couple years its gonna start to rust... id start saving for a new paint job or if its only peeling in one spot of the car take it to a shop and get it blended out but then your gonna have one nice part and the rest old paint.... choose wisely... wasnt gm experimenting with waterborn paints in the 80's? they suck

Kid Racer 01-28-2007 08:58 PM

nah its all over the car...its been like that ever since i had the car..witch march something will be a year..so yeah...i was juss trying too hold off on that caus ei wanna make it faster ....

WayFast84 01-28-2007 09:02 PM

i got a thread you should see!!!!!!!http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/bo...ml#post3200817

Iroc-z86 01-31-2007 08:47 PM

I would consider yourself lucky because my 86 has no clear coat what so ever. looks like a flat white lol but im too poor to get a paint job.

Savage_Messiah 02-01-2007 02:10 PM

transmaro93 02-01-2007 04:14 PM

iroc86 did you ever try to buff it up... or has all the clear chipped off... youd be surprised on what a nice buff job will get you on a base/clear finish...

SpeedMetalT/A 02-01-2007 04:34 PM

I had no clear coat left on my car and it looked like I had painted it a flat blue. Its actually being painted right now there isnt anything else you can do.

Iroc-z86 02-01-2007 05:31 PM

I havent tried to buff it yet, I might in the spring just to see. It is two colors now lol white and black cause i have new fenders and cowl hood.
