Question for teh geeks...

something i always wondered, why arent DVD ripped movies, dvd quality?...is it just the that the technology isnt there or is it something else?...ive been wondering this because dvd burners keep the quality pristine, but a more advanced computer cant rip it dvd quality, can someone explain this to me?

you answered your own question... it's downloaded, things are compressed for room
no one wants to have to have a 3GB file per movie when you can compress it to 7-800MB & get what you want, no excess

Exactly. Things on the web are shortened and compressed for portability.

even when i "back up" dvds they have to be compressed a bit to fit on a 4.7GB disc
sometimes i'll knock off foreign subtitles b/c hell, i'm not learning french anytime soon ;)

give this man a cookie! most dvds are on either 4.7gb dvds or dual layer dvds (9.something gb i forget) it is possible to rip them in pristine quality but it'll take up 4.7 gb on your HDD

umm no, eric if its that big it better be perfect quality. all i can say is try it

Exactly as was said above. You can't compress a 4.7+ GB file into 700ish MB without losing quality. That's why I stopped messing with DivX/Xvid. I do all my backups with DVD now. Still some compression (since DL DVDs are still a bit on the pricey side) but way better than DivX.

same goes for mp3s. an mp3 at 96kb/s sounds worse then a cd quality wav
