the gears look fine, but theres this one part (highlighted in red) is it supposed to look like that? i got posi all of the time going straight but turning it would do peg leggers most of the time. Im thinking that those 4 pieces are supposed to be pushing against it or something?

Not sure.

2 hints for taking pics of parts.
1) no flash.
2) manual focus can be very useful

1.) didnt use flash
2.) used the camera phone since the digital cam isnt here

WildBillyT 02-14-2007 07:51 PM

Sorry but without focus I really can't tell. :(

What type of LSD is in it?

That explains it. I wasn’t trying to be a jerk, I see lots of bad pics – and these are hard to see - just trying to help. A lot of people don't use all the buttons on their camera. :)

Ron, is that a Traction-Lok diff? It looks like it to me.

98tadriver 02-14-2007 09:19 PM

i dont know too much about the rear except my buddy who had it before me told me it was all auburn stuff in there. but i think i know what appears to be broken, i found a pic online of a ford 9inch rear

Differential pinion shaft?

WildBillyT 02-14-2007 09:47 PM

No, I don't think it's broken if it's a Traction-Lok. That picture is of an open differential. Auburn DOES make a limited slip diff for the 9" though, could be the same style. I've never dealt with an Auburn.

Here's some info on the internals:

How is your fluid? Any friction material in there?

Jack the car up and slowly turn one wheel. Do you hear clunking or clanking?

I haven't rebuilt a Traction-Lok yet, but I know with Eatons you can "tune" how hard they grab around corners and such by using different preload springs...

98tadriver 02-15-2007 05:15 AM

thank you for your help. the rear is already out of the car though.

i circled what i think that possibly broken part is. i found it in the pic from that link you sent me.

Wait a second. It's tough to tell from your pic... do you have 4 "halves" of a cross shaft?

98tadriver 02-15-2007 02:55 PM

yes, why? is that not good? and i do remember hearing some slight clunking when i had the car off the ground, like there was some play in it or something.

WildBillyT 02-15-2007 05:50 PM

I will check with the guy that built my 9". I am pretty sure you are supposed to have two halves and one full cross shaft.

98tadriver 02-15-2007 06:36 PM

that might splain' why it didnt get posi around corners but always in a str8 line

Yep, the consensus is that you have a broken cross shaft. There's supposed to be a block in there as well... any sign of that?

98tadriver 02-15-2007 08:41 PM

hmm not sure, ill def look at it tomorrow. is that going to be an expensive fix?

chrisfrom nj 02-21-2007 09:52 AM

your better off with a tractor trailor rear and an allison trans they are hard to blow up

98tadriver 02-21-2007 04:02 PM

i cant see the block without taking it all apart
what do i have to do to get to it?

WildBillyT 02-21-2007 08:15 PM

At this point, if I were you I'd take the whole assembled center section to whoever is good at rear setups in your area.
