Bridgeport Opening Night Results...
Figured i'd post this since Justin and Tim were unable to attend due to some wedding or something like that
Got the car finished up late saturday morning...went down with the back-up motor which has seen better days... 4th fastest time overall in the warm-up session...followed by a 4th place finish in the heat...car was great, with the other motor im sure we would have had something for the leaders...5th place finish in the feature, track slicked off and took rubber, pretty much one grove racing...car was perfect again just made the wrong tire selection...the top 4 went we the harder compound tire and that was the key to finishing up front...tires went away about lap 15...running 4th with 2 to go and just couldn't hang on anymore, ended up with a solid 5th place finish...overall a decent night for being drastically under-powered...primary motor should be done in another week hopefully -Randy |
Hmmm... no Timmay and the car didn't implode on you. <strokes chin> :)

Untamed has opened my eyes...
 I now see the connection...

Good job, congrats

Thanks guys...
one good thing did come out of this whole night...by running the back-up motor and having no problems we officially determined that there is no problem with our fuel delivery system; i.e. pick-up/cell/lines...the motor builder was leaning towards a fuel delivery problem on our end which lead to the demise of my other engine...well i guess i know its not my fault now...we'll just wait and see if he makes good on it

Sounds like a good start to the season, especially if you can keep Tim from blowing up your motors!

JonJZ...
50-75 HP I'd venture to guess as the difference (back-up motor hasn't been dynoed in years, nor freshend up lol)...if there were some sort of vaccum leak in the fuel system or at the intake like you previously spoke about don't you think I would have seen a rise in water temperature?...I know anytime in the passed when i was fighting a lean condition or had any type of leak (intake or exhaust) it was noticable on the gauges...the motor would pick up about 10 degrees (h2o temp) ...when my motor went temps were all still in perfect operating order...motor made that flat sound, stumbled abit, water and oil temp spike, oil pressure and fuel pressure dropped, and then she made a lotta smoke...the biggest mystery is the size of the hole in piston #6...lean conditons on a SBC usually lead to a melted piston in #3 0r 5, no?
Thanks for your input Jon! I'm always looking for someone else who could lead me to an answer. P.S...only thing different was the fuel pump and carb...motor builder took the carb that was on the motor when it blew up to "research"...fuel pump also stayed on the other motor...2 possible issues but i highly doubt it |

in my experience the #6 piston failure is a drag car occurrence for the most part - and it comes from to much timing -- we run as much as possible and an actual hole in a piston to me its detonation or a piece of metal throttle blade screw - air vent horn - pump sprayer that sort of thing but -- who knows -- the fuel pump could have after a 10 15 min run time could have slowed its flow and leaned the motor ??? if you want to be sure contact the pump company and ask for the flow test info - like in 20 seconds it should put out one gallon of fuel sort of thing and add it to your by monthly checks yea its another thing but thats racing -- jz
PS 46 deg of timing and cheap gas in photo |
John...
The engine builder is telling me this problem is not timing related becuase of where it put the whole in the piston...we had 36 degrees of timing in the motor (locked-out)...VP Late Model Plus fuel mixed w/VP C-12...i'm starting to think that maybe something did drop down there, although there was no damage to the heads...don't you think we would have found this so called "lean" condition in the 12 dyno pulls we did?...i'm still baffled by this whole thing...
I appreciate your time and responses john. Randy |
Congrats on what must have been some great driving. Any word on whether or not the motor will be done for this weekend?
