T56 full conversion kit

I have a 1996 Z28 and it's an automatic. I wanted to convert to a T56 trans and I looked on the internet and they don't really have anything besides separate part orders. I wanted to get the full kit because everything would be new and I'm not very knowledgeable on car transmissions so I would mess something up. Is there any place that anyone knows of where I can get a full T56 kit for converting?

GrandmasterCow 04-13-2007 02:46 PM

look on ls1lt1.com or ls1tech.com for people wanting to go from M6 -> A4, maybe you can be llucky and find someone that's willing to trade setups.

DrachenFire 04-13-2007 02:53 PM

only thing is that I would have a REALLY hard time getting it if it weren't in South Jersey because I'm only 17 and my parents won't let me drive out of South Jersey at the moment. I was hoping there was a place to just order an entire T56 kit so I could have a shop swap out the one I have and then I could sell the one I have to make back some of the money I spent. I also wanted to find a new one because my car only has about 60k miles on it which most 96s have WAY more.

ask them to ship

Tru2Chevy 04-17-2007 01:47 PM

You could go there and just not tell your parents where you were.....(not that I would advocate such a thing).

Or you could see if there is a member with a pickup that will get it for you and deliver it for some beer money (would be far cheaper than having it shipped).

where do you live? i work less than 10 minutes from contemporary. they are great guys, they do very very careful dismantling work, and they stand behind every used part they sell.

deadtrend1 05-22-2007 07:49 PM

you live in/near Galloway Twp. right. I've been to contempory corvette before, and have a pickup truck, with a passenger seat, am able to drive out of state, free on weekends with advanced notice, and accept cash, cashiers checks, or money orders .... :D

all kidding aside, they would be your best bet. I doubt anyone local is parting out a LT1 T56 car really. Me and my friend got one when we bought a wrecked 95 TA, and stripped the car down and junked it.

DrachenFire 05-24-2007 11:20 PM

yeh i'm going to look into when i save the money up... there's a guy i know who's parting out a 94 but i'm not sure if it has a T56 or if it would even be worth it... but as soon as i get the money i'll go to contemporary corvette =D

WildBillyT 05-25-2007 10:14 AM

I own a spare LT1 T-56 that I won't be using. I never ran it but I was told it was out of a wrecked '96 SS. If you are interested and when you get your plan together let me know.

DrachenFire 05-25-2007 02:47 PM

how much would you be selling it for?

WildBillyT 05-25-2007 02:56 PM

$750 for the trans. You will need to supply the shifter, bellhousing, clutch, flywheel/pressure plate, and all of the conversion parts.

DrachenFire 05-25-2007 02:59 PM

wow... yeh i have to save up cuz all i have right now is $100 but there's a lot happening this summer... how much do you think all of the other parts would cost?

That I don't know.

You can probably score a bunch of the parts from guys on here. A stock shifter might be $10-30, a bellhousing $50-75.

One guy in the classifieds is parting out a six speed car, check with him. Maybe you can get a package deal.

DrachenFire 05-25-2007 03:38 PM

yeh that would be nice... well i'm going to something at my school tonight that's supposed to be like the show fear factor where the students participate and with every thing that someone wins, their name gets put into a raffle to win a 1999 mitsu eclipse... if i win i'm going to sell it so i can upgrade my camaro... if that happens, i'll be able to get the trans and a lot more =D

If you score the eclipse, sell it and your Camaro and buy an LS1 six speed.

DrachenFire 05-25-2007 03:43 PM

idk if i could ever do that... i love my car and even though it would be alike (only much faster), it wouldn't be the same... idk it's weird... that car means everything to me

... a 99?? some prize... lol

anyways, when i got the stuff for my t56 conversion kit, all said and done, it came to about 1300. Ive seen FULL setups/kits complete sell for 1800-2000.
the trans i got came with a pro 5.0 shortthrow, bellhousing, and flywheel for 950.
then i had to get the slave cylinder spacer at the dealer, 40.
clutch kit, 250.
hydraulic slave and steel braded line on ebay, 40.

you'll still have the get the pedals and bracket and clutch master. i didnt need that cause the car i was working on already had a t5 setup

DrachenFire 05-25-2007 10:34 PM

damn... this is going to be too expensive... i don't have a job and can't save up that fast... think anyone can donate XD lol i wish... and the eclipse went to some freshmen who won't get his license til he's frickin 18...

jola 05-26-2007 02:46 PM

Why don't you sell your LT1 and buy another one with a manual already in it? That would probably be cheaper and safer. Just a suggestion.

DrachenFire 05-29-2007 10:18 PM

yeh but mine was $4500 in excellent condition with only 60k miles... i DOUBT highly that i could find 1 in anywhere near the same condition and get it for under $5500...

jola 05-30-2007 09:34 AM

Hey that is a good price. It would be a cool project, but I would say don't do it unless you want a manual that bad and love your car too much to part with it. Smoking SS paid $1300, so estimate that it will cost you approximately 25% of the cost of your actual car. If you are keeping the car for a very very long time, then that probably doesn't matter though. Its a bold move.
