whats the difference between LS blocks?
 

While looking on eBay, I see that LS1 blocks also say LS6. nbow is the block the same and thats it, or are they pulling me around. whats teh difference between an LS1/LS6 and LS2 block?

ls1 & ls6 have diff oil cavities.
ls2 is, i think, an all aluminum 6.0L with the knock sensors on the sides & an oval intake manifold.

LS1 and LS6 are part of the Gen III Engine design.
The LS6's casting is different then the LS1's. They are said to be stronger and allow better baffling and breathing in the crank case due to windows in the crank case. SOME LS1 engines got LS6 style blocks. 10-15% of 01 and 20-25% 02 Fbodies got LS6 blocks, and by 03 to the LS2, all LS1's got the LS6 block. All LS1 engines from 01 to 04 got the LS6's intake design, which improved flow and increased hp by a little.
Physicly, you wouldnt notice much between the two.
LS2 is a Gen IV engine. They got a little tweeking, but used the LS6's casting style to make the LS2's block. The LS2 is of larger displacement then the LS1 or LS6.

Here are pics to show the "windows" at the bottom of the cylinders... The first pic is an LS1 from a 2000 Z28. The second pic is my original motor from my 2001 Camaro SS, one of the 10-15% that actually got the LS6 block. When the "windows" were first explained to me, i was told that the piston almost acts like a umbrella in a way when it comes down and having the side vents up higher allows the pressure to be relieved faster off the the sides instead of all the way down, not sure if thats true, but sounds good, haha. And in case anyone is wonder, yes there is an LS6 block back in my car for originalitys sake.

no LSx motor was 350 cubic inches, the 346(LS1) were labled as 5.7L
the 5.3L truck were around 327 and then there were the 6.0L(364)

i know they were labeled as 5.7 huh...I don't know why I thought one was 350....

One external difference on a LS1 vs LS6 can be seen on the front pass side of the block. On LS1s, there is a little "pedestal" down in front of the pass. head, that area is flat on an LS6... the pics should help to explain it....

I thought the "bullseye" was on the Z06 blocks?
And no, the LS1/LS6 was just under 350 as others have said, but it carried the same liter displacmenet.

nah, the bulls eye is ls1.
heres a crappy pic of the top of my old motor, same one with the "windows" in the pic i posted before. There is no bullseye.
And i have no bullseye on my current motor either, which is a ZO6 crate.

i thought the same until i learned more about them and saw that it said 346 ci

all the ollld timers always ask if i have a 350 in my car lol im like 346 and they look at me like im crazy or something

the 04 LS1 has 'short' cylinder head bolt holes as opposed to the short and long arrangement of other LS1 blocks, as I found out the hard way, lol

what the crap happened to the side of your block?????

well the short version is...
...got gas, was mainly a diesel mix, damn Hawthorne Shell.
injectors got stuck open, hydrolocked #1 cylinder, rod snapped and took out the side of the block, oil pan, a/c bracket, steering rack, etc.
That first happened back in August 2005.
I finally started to car with the new motor 2/27/07 and on the road about a month later.

As far as most people are concerned, my current setup is stock... :twisted:

(the first pic, of the cleaner block, is from a '00 Z28 that went off roading and sheered the bottom of the engine. The crank came out in 3 peices. I bought the motor for some random parts and bolts, etc.)
