Rebuild an LT1
hey guys i have a 97 T/A LT1 with 126k miles on it and was wondering how much it would cost to get it rebuilt because i dont wanna spend money making it faster just to have it die out on me
EDIT: also i would like it to be a performance rebuild |
STROKE IT!!!!!!

The amount of money that goes into swapping a more expensive LS1 motor into an LT1 car out weights the cost of rebuilding the LT1.

also i plan on keeping an LT1 in it no matter wat because eventually i plan on having one of each generation with their respective engine so later on i plan to buy an 02 with an LS1 also |
well the LT1 and Gen I small block use the pistons, but a different crank and rods. I've picked out a rotaing combo(not a kit, my choice of parts) from summit and its 789 so far for a Gen I should be around the same...but you'll need to figure in gaskits bearings and labor. gaskits/bearings should be around 300-500 and i couldn't give ya a decent guess on labor...unless you get a guy on here to help you...once you get the cam bearings pressed in and the block machined .030(383 stroker) or .060(388 stroker) its fairly easy buy time consuming to do it your self.

thats alot less than i thought it would be and im friends with a rly good mechanic who always gives me big discounts on labor on minor things like services and headlights and the such he normally charges me no labor at all |
that number is not even close for a rebuild... I would love to tell you what you are actually looking at but I was told it is not allowed..
|
yea i would figure at least 1800(asuming JS can't cause it might be free advetising lol)...thats were i'm at with my 3.4 but thats with $600 just in gaskets...I would prepair for 3Gs so your prepaired for extra
|
The price depends on what you want to do. If you just want to keep it stock, new rings, bearings, and gaskets ,will get the shortblock done for about 400.00. Then you have to do the heads, thats going to cost you 6-700, at a machine shop. I have seen complete rebuilt LT1 engines for sale for 1700, you just have to bolt it in. It all depends on were you want to go with it, if its performance your looking for, the cost is going to be more, depending how radical you want to go. It wouldnt take much effort to get to 5 or 6 grand.

is there anything wrong with it leading to a rebuild, cause 126k isnt all THAT high of a milage

The cost to rebuild is going to be dictated really by what tyou want from it and then what parts you put into the engine.
So when you say a performance built, and you talking about just adding a few HP, or going allot futher? The thing with a 120K LT1 is when you start taking it apart you run into the " now is a good time too..." replace the opti, Water Pump etc. None of which are cheap. |
