no cranking....nothing!

so i go to start up the white car for the first time a in a week or so and on the first try it cranks once and stops, like the battery didnt have enough juice. i cranked it again and it started. i moved it to the street and then about an hour later i go to start it and it cranks once then nothing, try again and not even a crank. pushed it into my driveway and hooked up some jumpers and noooo good. so i knew the starter had been thru lots of abuse so i figured it had to be that. got a new one snapped all the bolts to my Y pipe to remove and install the new starter, put it all back together and still nothing!
last time this happened it would crank but not start and it turned out to be the ECM

new within the last year are....
starter, today
cap n rotor
ignition module
ECM

the battery is at 13.0 volts when hooked up to the charger so its got enough juice and at 12.6 on its own.

fuseable links?

maroman88 06-11-2007 05:53 PM

are they in one of the wires that go to the starter? little black thingy? i thought thats wat it was but didnt wanna mess with it. do they go bad often n how do u replace it? never had to deal with one of those before

GP99GT 06-11-2007 06:07 PM

if the link is "bad" it will burn up...the black thing is supposed to stop it from burning the whole wire, just the first 6 inches or so

i'd check grounds if i were you

maroman88 06-11-2007 06:11 PM

nothing melted or burnt, checked grounds once gotta do it again

camaro2you 06-11-2007 06:18 PM

if you have to replace them you need to get fusible link wire, you can get it at advance auto parts or some place like that.

maroman88 06-11-2007 09:10 PM

fusable links check good, all 3 are hot on both sides with the ignition in run

the single purple wire? is that the one that sends the signal to crank?

BonzoHansen 06-11-2007 10:05 PM

Yes. Purple goes to it's own post on the solenoid (the links should go to the cable post). It should be hot on start.

Everyone needs one of these:

maroman88 06-11-2007 10:25 PM

i tested the purple with the test light with the ignition to start and got nothin but it just started pouring so i couldnt get more into depth with it

BonzoHansen 06-11-2007 10:29 PM

If the purple wire is not hot at start (not run/acc), then you have a problem upstream - neutral safety switch, vats, ignition switch, etc. Or the wire is damaged.

Jared1970Chevelle 06-11-2007 11:50 PM

your vats or ignition on the column might have broke a wire in the column....

ps... how much was the ecm?

maroman88 06-12-2007 03:01 AM

no vats here and i think the remanufactured ecm was under $200

the reason i thought it was the starter in the first place was how it acted. it cranked over once, felt like it was its last atempt and then no more, but now im really stumped. ill have to look into why the prurple wire isnt gettin any power when cranked

maroman88 06-12-2007 10:27 AM

update!

i jumped the purple wire to the positive battery cable an got the car started, but still nothin with the key, which leads me to believe its sumthin with the ignition switch. where is that and how do i replace it?

camaro2you 06-12-2007 10:34 AM

it is on the steering colum it self, you have to drop the column, unhook a few wires take out two small screws/bolts and the switch will come out, i think its about 40 bucks at advance.

maroman88 06-12-2007 06:17 PM

the car wouldnt run at all if it was the ignition module under the cap on the dizzy that was no good??

It would still crank.

maroman88 06-13-2007 10:40 AM

1 Attachment(s)
would this be it ontop of the column

V 06-13-2007 10:46 AM

yes, the thing with the black and blue connectors is it. The starter wire i belive is yellow(one of them) and then it runs to the neutral safty swith on the shifter, from there it thens becoems purple and goes to the starter.

maroman88 06-13-2007 06:21 PM

k ordered a new ignition switch from NAPA, guna get it tomarrow and hopefully get it in

maroman88 06-14-2007 01:35 PM

replaced ignition switch...watta pain in the ass, and still no starting. i traced the wires up to the relay for the neutral safety switch with the B&M shifter and the relay has power going in from the ignition but not back out to the purple wire that runs to the starter. looks like im guna have to replace the relay from radioshack...? i hope thats it

or should i just bypass the neutral safety switch?

Don't bypass your NSS. Not a good idea.

maroman88 06-14-2007 09:46 PM

ITS ALIVE

stoooopid little relay for my B&M shifter went DOA on me. it took me a little while to figure out what wires went where to get the reverse lights to work and the car was only starting when in reverse lol. all is good as of now tho, only took 5 solid days workin on it. i just gottta put everything back together tomarrow
