I'm off to Basic Training...

At 1 pm tomorrow, I have to be at the Army Recruiting Station and then its off to Ft Hamilton in brooklyn. After some final processing and such tuesday and wed, I then fly down to Missouri and head to my final destination, Ft Leonard Wood. I will be there for about 16 weeks (9 weeks for BCT and 7 for AIT, MOS 88M)

I am really excited and looking forward to this whole new experience.
Obviously I will not be able to post up here or even access a computer probably until December.

My SS got tucked in today for its hibernation period. I got that CarCapsule thing I mentioned a while back. I will probably not be able to drive it until next spring, how depressing is that. Kasey saw it earlier tonight so he vouch for how hilarious it looks, but it does its job of protecting the car, I was throwing basket balls and water bottles at it.

Tomorrow morning I have a ton of stuff to still get done so i will not be able to check this site again.

I had a great time at the Nats and I always had fun hanging out with everyone from this site at BBQs, the grease trucks, and even parties at my house at at others.

I'll see many of you in December, when there will be another party... ;-)

Heres a picture of my garage, with everything all ready for a long rest...

Goodbye, for now

I went to basic and AIT at Fort Lost in the Woods, Misery. I went there for 12B, Combat Engineer back in 1992. 35th Battalion, located on Kansas Street, right in the middle of the post. I've been to other posts before, but Leonard Wood is one of the best - not so huge you feel instantly lost, but not so small they cut corners on paying for things like good food.

Enjoy the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, the clay, the tree roots and the mosquitos. Since you're starting late August, enjoy the cold rain, damp PT areas and fog. I went May - August with mine so right in the middle of Summer. Hot days, warm nights, cold rain.

Good luck man and don't let their head games get to you too much. It's hell the first two weeks, then you settle into a rythm. Months from now you'll look back and laugh.

Oh, when you get to AIT, buy a disposable camera from the PX. You'll spend a lot more time in the field, giving you chances for some cool pics to help remember the experience years from now.

HUA!

Good luck. From what I hear, MO is cake. 88M is the one you have to worry about.. your the main target. My father (Now a Captain) was an 88M a couple years ago. He actually has on video 2 attacks that were made on his convoy.. as well as the stories of the countless other times they got attacked. One of his drivers is now pretty screwed up, and he's got the Bronze Star for saving an endentured (SP?) servant.

Me, I'm gonna be nice and cushy with my 24B Information Technology gig.. except I'm heading off to Ft Knox in winter time.

Ok, more war stories time.

I went to Ft Knox in February 1994 for weapons qual. Had to head down there for heavy weapons qualifications since the prison where we did rifle qual couldn't handle the heavier stuff. Anyway, just 2.5 days down there and a blizzard came in. First time (at the time) since the post was closed in 12 years. Blowing snow, temps were hovering around 19 all day... and they sent us out to the M60 range. Couldnt see a damn thing, so everyone put 200 rounds down range without looking and called it a day. Humvee got stuck on the side of a trail and had to be pulled with a 5ton cab.

The entire time there, we kept wondering where the gold was.

(On topic): Paul, if Dixie's "Massage Parlor" is still there, just south of Leonard Wood, stay out. You don't need any diseases and the MP's don't need to arrest you. 8-)

Man its all coming back now.
