ohhhh mannnn
1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Door Sedan. There are 160,000 miles on the car. The car looks good and runs good. Newer tires, brakes, and battery. MUST SELL - MAKE AN OFFER. asking $850
called up...a/c doesnt work which i dont care about, failed inspection cause the check engine light is on which if it still runs good is probably nothing major...and it leaks some antifreeze which at worst is the radiator, no big deal...i figure i can get it for like 600-700, fix it, and drive it...sell the saturn and make money on the deal. thoughts? |
sounds like a plan. make sure you go over the car completely before sealing the deal.
|
im thinkin its a 3.1 which kinda sucks cause the 3.8 is way better...but oh well for that price cant really pass it up. im going to look at it in about an hour
|
test drove it...runs great, drives great, tires are practically brand new...its missing a hubcap, its a 3.1, SE...green...some scratches and scrapes but looks decent i guess. coolant isnt leaking onto the ground, its leaking in the motor....its a 3.1 so that doesnt suprise me, intake gaskets fail on them all the time, should be an easy fix. CEL light is on for code P0753, 1-2 shift solenoid, which makes sense cause it felt like the car was starting off in 2nd gear. how hard is it/how expensive is a shift solenoid? if its not too bad im definitely gonna grab this car up.

there is actualy a crossover tube for the heater core that leaks on that vintage of w-body. justin had to fix his in the lumi before.

crossover tube leaks externally
|
into the car? like in the interior... the only time i could smell coolant in a car was when the coolant was leaking into the interior via the shot heater core.
as for the solenoid, i believe it's an internal part of the transmission, although it reports to the trans computer which in turn reports to the main computer. that's my understanding, anyway - i could be wrong. |

jsutins car didn't leave puddles anyplace that i know of. just had a faint smell of coolant sometimes and he woudl have to add some once in a while. once the tube goes completely bad i am sure it will leak all over the place since it does go under the engine. |
lol no not into the car...i meant into the motor. ie burning it. 3.1s are notorious for intake gaskets so if its not just a slow leak from that crossover tube ill take off the intake, no big deal, still have the saturn to drive around in while i fix this.
and i just looked up the solenoid on a google search, looks like all you have to do is drop the trans pan and everything is right there, solenoids go for about 30-40 bucks...i just called him and offered $650 cash money, he said if he doesnt get cash from another person looking at it today i can go pick it up tomorrow. |
well im going to get it tomorrow, 650 bucks...woot
|
Timmy = wrong. You are thinking of the wrong generation. That was only on 1st gen W bodies. GPs started their 2nd generation (as a W-body) in '97. Tim, the lumina poured coolant on the ground until I got the crossover tube cut off and replaced with heater hose. The smell was just from my repair not being sealed well I believe.
I'm betting it's intake gaskets Matt, as you said the 3100s are notorious for that.....good luck with it. - Justin |
Congrats Matt, sounds like it needs a lot of tuning up.
|
intake gaskets cant be that hard, i did heads on my mustang without any prior knowledge...plus i have the saturn to drive so its no rush really. now i just have to decide, should i keep the saturn as a DD, or the GP?
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...590_1_full.jpg looks like that...but with steelies/hubcraps |
intake gaskets on 3.1's are not fun.
