A new paint fad?
I was in school earlier today and I over heard a conversation that I won't soon forget, as a matter of fact I had to get in on it. Aparently theres a new thing goin around where people will intentionally make there car rust! They sand off the paint, primer, and clearcoat etc., alow it to rust to there preference, put a clearcoat on it to stop it from further rusting i guess and off they go just like that. And its supposed to be big with the ricers over anyone else.
Now the kids talking about arent doing this but theyve seen it being done. Has anyone else heard of this? This is the craziest thing ive heard yet i really hope its not true. :banghead: |
sounds like ricer mentality
but no i never heard of that being done. |
:fireguns: :rice: much like racing a honda, thats retarded
annddddd ttiwwp |
If stupidity were a sin, there's an awful lot of people that would eventually burn in hell.

There was a car in Hot Rod a while ago that had various things done to it to make it look old...an old car that is all orig. and non restored has what is known as "patina" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patina. Patina is now accepted as "cool," just like a restoration.
|
This is a new one to me but somehow I'm wondering if anyone can pull it off and make it look good., I highly doubt it though...

i know the car in hot rod looked cool. It was a like a 30s ford i belive might have to did up the issue. One question though, would the clear coat acctuly stop the rusting? I dont think it would

trust me guys the moment i find someone dumb enough to do this...i will get pics and they will be up here right away!
Also I doubt it has anything to do with the rat rod era because from what i know its more of a hontard thing and they could care less about that |
back when i was into mountain bikes and bmx, they came out with a finish called "raw" it was just clearcoat over the bare chromoly tubing which had rust and still had the stamp marks from the tubing manufacturer
|
I wouldnt be suprised if these so called "ricers" sanded down their fiberglass panels and expect it to rust out.
|
Half of those cars are plastic though...
I know that whole rusty beat look is cool for Ratt Rods though. |

No doubt this a a new street rodder fad that has come up with the renewed popularity of "traditional" style street rods. I'm kinda into the street rodding scene. My dad owned a rod shop in Florida before he died, and I still kinda follow what's going on. Although I definitely don't have the kind of money it takes to play that game, so for now I just watch...
THere have been loads of articles about this in the street rodding magazines in the last year or two... rod builders going to great lengths to give cars that left-out-in-the-barn look. Even some big-name builders have been doing it. Most of the big shows (Autorama, Oakland, Goodguys) have "traditional" rod sections and new judging categories for "unfinished" rods. Here are some pics: This is the car that was in Hot Rod. '37 Ford http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3...r1/Patina1.jpg This car is owned by Billy Gibbons, ex-ZZTop guy and big-time street rodder: http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3...r1/Patina3.jpg This is a pic from one of the big shows, don't know anything about the car: http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3...r1/Patina2.jpg In my opinion, this is silly. It's just another street rod fad like pastel colors in the 80s or neon chassis lights in the 90s. I get it. I really LIKE traditional rods. IMO, though, cars should only have a "patina" if the guy who built it couldn't afford paint, not because the owner paid the builder $20k to paint it like that. |
Yeah its a Rat Rod thing, you can purchase paint that actually looks like and has the texture of rust.
|
on the old cars its cool, but on a ricers car is crap.
|
Clearcoat won't prevent the rust from further rusting. It will actually continue rusting because the rust will still eat away at the metal under the clearcoat and eventually rot through to the other side. Interesting you heard ricers talking about this because i've seen a honda around my area that is riced out and the hood looks "fuzzy" due to all the rust on it  I always questioned why he left it like that
|
i like rat rods, so dont knock on it. as for new cars with it, its retarded.

The writer of that article in Hot Rod sumed it up well: "It's like punk rock going Top 40. And Green Day sells a lot of records." In response, I say: "Who the hell ever said Green Day was punk rock??!" |
