1996 VW Passat TDI

I'm considering the purchase of a 96 VW Passat TDI. Anyone have any intimate experience with these cars? I'm thinking the 40+ mpg will help my 40+ mile commute.

Any thoughts?

my friend had a 95 vr6 and dumped a TON of money in upkeep, dunno how different/more reliable the tdi's are, but unless you plan on doing a lot of work yourself (we did) it will cost a ton when things go wrong

A lot of electrical nightmares with the 90's VW's. Hell even my friend is having wiring issues with his '03.

good friend of mine from high school has an mk3 turbo diesel, beats the **** out of it every time he drives it and has done so for the past 5 years, takes it like a champ and still runs...pretty quick too with a MBC :)

they aren't bad cars if you can do repairs yourself and don't mind a few things here and there being amiss. they certainly drive well and you will enjoy. i think you should go for it

i tried to pick up a 92 2.0 5-speed with a broken odometer for $300 to beat on and teach my sister stick. what a nice car that was for the money...

A sales rep I used to deal with had one and loved it. He was getting around 50 mpg. If I could afford another vehicle I'd buy one.
