Stock irocs

What do the 225hp 5.7 irocs do in the 1/4 stock? mid 14's? a buddy of mine had a 245hp version and he ran low 14's. im thinkin about takin the car next week to the track so im trying to get an idea of what to expect.

Tru2Chevy 03-05-2008 04:12 PM

I believe that 100% stock they were good for high 14's with a good driver, and most of the 245hp cars were good for mid 14s. What ET and MPH did your buddy run, and is his car bone stock?

I have witnessed 2 bone stockers that were 87's run low 14's.....Then a week or so later my buddy did the ole air box gutting and threw in k&n's and a set of slicks and it went 13.8..

Cool....guess my estimates are a bit conservative.

my boy ran 14.3@95 i believe and it was bone stock down fo the air filter 245hp version. he had decent tires but nothing special. mine has an 88 motor i believe (225). igot k&n drop in filters, gutted the air box to hell. shorty headers, stock ypipe, and 3 inch flowmaster cat back. i'm hoping for a 14.6 - 14.7 at 94 or so. think its possible?

With those mods and good launch you should be flirting with 13s

Its called a stall converter or a stall for short.

Silly mustang drivers.....

Back on topic, I will say low 14s

WildBillyT 03-17-2008 08:53 AM

Are we correcting each other? Awesome.

It's called a torque converter. His converter already has a stall speed.

The proper way is "Without a high stall torque converter."

I'd say probably right around the same time, if you can get a good launch. Also, don't expect times like that in the dead of summer; better get there before we have those hot 'n' humid 80+* days. I remember running against a guy with a 5.7 GTA at one of the GM HighTech Performance Track days at Englishtown a few years ago when I had the cammed TPI 305 in my car. I ran a 15.0 to his 15.3, but it was 90* with high humidity.

Just putting this out there: in 1988 your car made 225 hp @ the crank. Its now 20 years old, so depending on the condition of the inside of your engine (based on maintenance, etc) who knows what that number really is now. Based on your mod levels and other similar vehicles, your car could run anywhere from a high 13 to a low 15, weighing heavily on how well you can drive. We can speculate and bench race all day long, the only real way to know is by actually running the car.

Also, a higher stall converter may help marginally (at this stage), but seeing as how a near stock TPI (such as your own) car's powerband starts at around 1500-2000 RPM, and the stock converter can flash to 12-1800ish...the money spent there wouldn't be as beneficial as say, more mods to help the car breathe better, or even suspension.

Good luck.

ya i'm hoping to go to the track soon. i'm sure the motor is a bit on the tired side. i also have 2.73 gears :barf: i'm sure that's gonna kill me too. i'll be happy with a 14.6. it's an automatic so at least i don't have to worry about missing a gear.

JerzyIroc 03-19-2008 05:13 PM

my stupid jerk import friends have a 10 dollar pool going that i won't run better than a 15.0.

Don't let them psych you out when you go to the track. When it's time to run, just focus on what you are doing, and ignore everything else.
