delayed start issue?

k so i have a weird issue with my 89 trans am.. during the the last month or so i've noticed that when i go to start my car it sometimes takes me holding the key in the 'on' position for a couple of seconds longer than usual before the car tries to fire up. what i mean by this is..... i turn the key, the dash lights turn on, then nothing happens for about 4-5 seconds (still holding the key), then the engine fires up.. i had the ignition switch in the steering column replaced about a year? ago by my mechanic.. the weird thing is sometimes it starts right up with no delay , and other times it takes 4-5 seconds or longer than it should..

thats funny....not really but i have the same problem with my 99 concorde. sometimes i hold the key on and it acts like your issue. other times i have to try it several times until the starter kicks in. was worse in the cold though. thats the strangest part of it for me.

So when you turn the key to the start position it just cranks for 4-5 seconds before catching and starting up, or it does nothing at all and then suddenly the starter engages and the engine fires up?

i changed the switch in the column that is behind the part the key goes into. i broke the old one open and found the contact points fried and corroded. been good ever since

i think you mean the electrical portion of the ignition switch. don't know the fancy words for it.

yep thats what i replaced and it solved my problem. maybe it could solve your starting issue?

I have this problem with my Camaro. I turn the key and it makes a tickign noise likes theres not enough power going to the starter, then sometimes ittl turn, and sometimes I haveto turn the key back and try again after waiting 5 seconds and ittl work. and then sometimes it wont do it at all, but mainlt that will ahppen when I dont lockthe doors and the factory security system is engaged.
