Crank hub

I can't get the stupid hub off, and my shiny, ported heads are dieing to go back on the engine. I have a puller on it, and then used an impact gun to try and get it off, no luck. Help! any ideas?

deadtrend1 06-13-2008 04:42 PM

is this a LT1?

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 04:47 PM

That it is, soon to be showing LSXs that they are not gods favorite kids.

Featherburner 06-13-2008 04:59 PM

You're are probably pressing against the hub it self. You need to press against a bolt threaded in the crank or something smaller inserted in the bolt hole. I've heard of people using a 1/4 extension. You need to be careful of the threads when doing this. I personally use a longer 7/16 bolt to press on.

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 05:04 PM

So thread a 7/16 bolt into the crank and use that to push out with?

Featherburner 06-13-2008 05:22 PM

Thread the bolt in the crank a good amount. Make sure there's room under the head of the bolt to allow the hub to move foward. Press against the bolt head with the jack screw of the puller.

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 05:27 PM

Ok, how do I make sure the puller doesn't thread the bolt into the crank?

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 08:11 PM

Thanks a lot feathers, went to home depot got a bolt and it worked like a charm!

deadtrend1 06-13-2008 08:52 PM

I used a long hex bolt so the point of the crank had something to rest into when I turded it.

Glad you got it, theres another 1 or 2 threads on here with other people having the same problem.

jack the motor up, lower the K member a little and put a new one on. Its not as hard as it seems

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 09:32 PM

Its only the one corner on the passenger side, and I think with some liberal amount of RTV it should be good. I hope.

You're welcome. Something to think about. If you don't have a balancer installation tool you might want to head back to the Depot and pick up a length of 7/16-20 threaded rod and a couple of washers and a nut for installation of the hub. DO NOT use the bolt to press the hub on. Thread the rod in the crank and press the hub on with the nut and washers.

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 09:43 PM

But what do you guys think of putting some RTV on there? Its just the one top corner, and I can press it back in there seems pretty tight.

It's going to be a pain in the ass but you need to change it. Sorry.

LTb1ow 06-13-2008 09:48 PM

Ugh, but I don't want toooo  Oh well, just remove the rest of the bolts, remove old gasket and put new one in?

deadtrend1 06-14-2008 10:30 AM

you think a LT1 leaks all over now, wait till you band aid the oil pan gasket.

i haven't done anything yet, but you should see my leaks. haha. one of these days/weeks/months?

ImpalaSSpeed96 06-14-2008 12:55 PM

They're a B to change...

And the hub's are never easy to get off. I fought w/ mine last week for an hour, knowing how to get it off, and I've had it off before!!!

That really sucks you jacked the gasket. How did you manage to do that? Make sure you RTV it real good when you put the new one on.

God loves all his children, but he loves the lsx children just a bit more

sweetbmxrider 06-14-2008 02:46 PM

 hahaha!

LTb1ow 06-14-2008 02:57 PM

Well looking at in a bit more depth today, I think it was RTVed or similar before.... The tear doesn't look new, and I think I just moved it so it was out of place. So that kinda sucks, but hey I got my timing cover all shiny today at work!

JerzLT1 06-14-2008 05:27 PM

i never had a problem with my Crank Pulley just using a puller from advanced. it came right off even the first time. every time after that it just got easier.

you talking about the pulley or the hub. The pulley is cake to pull off the hub. The hub is what catches everyone off guard ... :)
