well, i burned up yet another computer
i'm about to pull the trigger on this new one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=A180-5101
just wanted to see what the computer geeks thought. it seems to have everything i need, plus some expansion available for the future. what d'you think? |
Jim, I'd just make sure that the warranty isn't a PITA to claim on. I bought a machine from TD once and it was a total POS. Everything went within the span of 9 months. And when I say everything I mean it- from the case switch down to the CPU cooling fan and everything in between. I wonder if it was made out of spare parts or something.

this doesn't look like it, and they claim it's a 2 year, in-house warranty - as in they come to my house to fix it. tell ya the truth, i don't need that kind of support, but it is nice to know they will swap out bad parts.

-it is in a microtower so unless you have a box fan on it chances are very high it will over heat soon -all truthe and honesty yeah I was a AMD fan boy for ever loved there s939 chips but intels C2D is a much more stable and better chip for the same price -the ram config is bullshlt 2x1gb and 2x512mb you should never mix like that the 2x512 is going to bottle neck the pi$$ out of the machine and make it run slower then just the 2x1gb - ATI RADEON HD2400 50.00 vid card most motherboards have better onboard hope you don't plan to do any gaming or video editing or anything that requires decent graphics(BTW runing vista on this will kill any type of speed you are hoping to get) -now the biggest problem I see here is the fact that they are trying to run vista on a machine with only 300 watt power supply that is barley enough to run the components that they are including don't even bother trying to expand or upgrade or addon anything els. any decent machine that is capable of running vista requires min 500-600w power supply -the whole vista capable sticker they throw on the computers is total BS vista isn't ment to run on low end pc's such as this if you do buy this computer get it with xp that will save you so so many headaches and possibly a monitor or pc out the window overall thi would be a very very bad machine to purchase well that is what I see is wrong with that drop me a pm and we can work something out i've been building and selling custom computers for 4 years now if you really want a decent computer that isn't going to crap out on you in 2-3 month I can get you hooked up for 600-800 easy or you could jsut buy my ebay auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...7&Category=179 |

amd's quad core is the equivalent of intels core 2 duo not to mention the AM2 chips are power hogs and put off a **** ton of heat unless you running a after market heatsink it will over heat 3gigs is bad you need stay with even numbers for max performance and don't mix and match the stick sizes thats asking for alot of trouble. also Tigerdirect should have gone out of business like 3 years ago I stopped buying from them when I ordered a chip 2 video cards and some fans when I got the **** in the pc the only things that worked where the fans if you must buy a prebuilt I would get a laptop IMO check these out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883229024 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834110312 |

www.Geeks.com Some of the best computer tv cable deals on the web Period. I also like tigerdirect and newegg some times.
That is a really good deal tho! Let us know how you like it if you end up getting that particular one. |
I would buy it if it included a flat panel......
Im an Intel/Nvidia guy and I prefer building my own although I did just get a dell inspiron 530s through work(b4 the canning) which is the same setup except intel c2d 2.20ghz, 4 gigz 800mhz ram and 8600gt nvidia. $100 :) |
Not sure why, but the thread reminded me of this. Intel vs AMD video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgOmMAasqto
I was a AMD fan until the K62 chip went outdated, since then I haven't had very good luck with them. I would check into an Intel C2D if you want a new setup. If your interested, I just picked up 14 computers last night if you need a cheap replacement. A few of them are spoken for already but I should have a few left. There Dell Gx270 2.4ghz Pentium 4 with Hyper-thread 1 gig of memory and 800mhz FSB, they all have legal copies of XP Pro and I'm not sure of the hard drive size. I leave for vacation Saturday morning so if your interested I could put one together before then. If not I would check Newegg.com like the other guys said. I've also seen some decent deals in the weekend newspaper ad's. |
One thing Ive learned with PC's is you get what you pay for. IMO that PC is iffy. More than likely garbage parts thrown together. Im sure you could drive to MicroCenter and buy everything needed to build a powerful PC for around what you're looking to spend. MC is in Patterson, right off the Parkway and real easy to get to.
And Intel FTW. This isnt from a fanboy side or anything, it's proven. I would stay with a dual core though and not opt for a quad core. You more than likely wont need it. I upgraded from a E6600 to a Q6600 and see no real difference. |
Stevoone pm me info a cheaper rig you got. My computer isnt the best and its illegal copy of windows finally took a dump a few weeks back so either its a new rig or a new copy of windows either way pm me.

Quad cores are used for servers end statement AMD'S AM2 chips just aren't that good intel got there a$$es whooped by amd with the S939 chips and rebuilt there chips from the ground up with new technology something amd wasn't expecting and there chip was bltch slapped by the C2D You talk about expanding with that machine and I am telling you forget it that 300watt psu won't let you expand that micro tower won't give you room to use those extra slots or to add a new power supply(chances are that mobo will only work with acer branded PSU's) seriously pm me and we can talk over aim and I can set you up with a nice system for that price custom built hell I can even show you how to do it so you don't have to have some one els come and fix it. I was hoping the amd's 4X4 quad cores would pack a punch but they don't intels quad cores are so much better hence why they cost more and yes you will be able to tell the difference between running 2x2gb or even 2x1gb over 2x1gb+2x512 it is called dual channel and don't forget about the 49.99 video card you are gettign that will barley run pong and like tru2chevy said build a rig with a little bit older parts such as the X2 chips or opteron chips from AMD those are still running strong and can handle any game on the market right now and for the same price as that acer will out perform it 2 ta 1 if not better yes you will have to use ddr ram over ddr2 and seeing as a nice set of ddr ram costs nothing now days and it will our perform that 3gb POS lower then store brand ram that is included with the acer **** if your such a AMD hard ball I have a DFI lanparty NF3 mobo sitting in my closet I will sell you or possibly even my s939 rig running DFI lanparty NF4 SLI DR (it is water cooled and custom by all means) in the end listen to my advice or not keep this in mind you get what you pay for and if it is to good to be true it is!! |

I have a quad core Q6600 and my box is no server! Try running Supreme Commander without a quad and tell me how you do =p |

Im sure it doesnt. Again my step up from the E6600 to the Q6600 netted me no gains in gaming at all.
I'm running... P5W DH Deluxe MB Q6600 with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme cooler 4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 (PC 6400) 850W OCZ GameXStream PSU 2 - 320GB Cuda SATA drives ran in RAID 1 8800 GTS 640MB Card X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro sound card |
