Alllllright....every time my comptuer does the automatic loading of new windows software, it restarts itself, and then I try to go onto the internet...and it doesnt work.
AIM works...but Internet doesnt. I am connected to the internet, but when I open IE, nothinghappens So.......what the ef? Please dont say "elohel get (insert cool internet service here)" just help me fix this stuff |
Just get firefox. I don't care that you don't want it. IE is CRAP.
PS check your firewall. |
He's right firefox is the shiznit. If that wont fix it iv said it before format and start from scratch with firefox.
|
firefox
|
If you restart again, will it work?
I used to have a problem that, if I brought my laptop to someone's house and used their wireless access, then came home, turned it on, and it connected to our wireless, I couldn't get on any of the sites I went on at the other house. It was weird. As soon as I rebooted, it'd work again. |
Reboot does not work, but I did a system restore to before the 13th's update, and it works...hence why Im on the site now.

Can you be more specific with "nothinghappens"? Is there an error message? unable to resolve address? open up a command prompt and type ping google.com - do you get results? If you do I would check your connection settings in IE. What kind of ISP do you have? Do you need to connect through a proxy or is it just home use? I'd need some more information before I help you further. |
if aim works you are obv. getting a connection somewhere. check your firewall or maybe your internet explorer software is faulty. try uninstalling it and re installing it or consider downloading a new browser
|
There is a known problem with one of the Window's updates, and a resetting of firewall settings. If you use Zone Alarm as a firewall, there will be a conflict with Zone Alarm and the new firewall settings within IE. One fix is to disable the firewall within IE, and make sure Zone Alarm is ON, with all of their current updates. That's what fixed mine.
EDIT: Make sure Zone Alarm recognizes the PC / network you are connected to by looking at the liststings in the Trusted section. If your PC / network isn't listed, manually kick off a search for networks or unplug then plug in the network cable. |
I asked him the other night what firewall he was using and after a long pause I got
"umm... stock?" So I don't think it's ZA  |
I think I dl'ed zone alarm, and that was a mess so I canned it.
I "updated" itself again, and now I cannot get onto IE. It says internet connection cannot be established, but my wireless is on, AIM works, just IE doesnt connect. I had my firewall "off" and still did that, so I dont think its a firewall problem. I need to go back and uninstall the updates, andmake sure that the computer does not automaticly update anymore. |
You shouldn't allow auto updates anyway. Bill Gates is evil.....
Have you tried FireFox yet? :D www.getfirefox.com - Justin |
go to tools --> options --> and find out what type of connection you are using in IE. re set it up using the wizard and see if that fixes anything. Also just to verify everything is dandy go to start --> run --> type "ipconfig /all" and post the output here.

Al,
Did the Windows update include Service Pack 3? If so, there's a known issue with SP3 and IE. Google more issues if this doesn't help. Office XP Service Pack 3 problems bite users By Brian Livingston Microsoft released its latest mass beta test on an unsuspecting populace when it started downloading into end users' computers on Mar. 9 its new Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. The update package — which at least has a poetic name — has caused grumbling by PC professionals who refer to it using some less-than-flowery language. "The Pack was not widely circulated around the developer community before release," says Woody's Office Watch, an e-mail newsletter that focuses on Microsoft Office tips and tricks. Referring to reports of widespread incompatibilities between SP3 and other companies' software (and some of Microsoft's own software), the publication added, "This is something that Microsoft could have avoided if it had wished to, but presumably either didn't know nor care about the consequences for customers." In this issue of Brian's Buzz, I report on these problems and bring you some fixes and workarounds to mitigate the pain. I do not recommend that you install Office XP SP3 unless you examine the issues described below and carefully test the service pack on a noncritical machine that's running your particular suite of applications. SP3 doesn't install if SP1 or SP2 are installed With all of SP3's problems, it's ironic that one of the most common complaints is that people can't get the dang thing to install at all. The noninstallation is iritating but saves the users from having to deal with the incompatibilities that would have resulted! This problem is succintly described by reader Evan Katz, who couldn't get SP3 to install on Office XP. In fact, he couldn't even get Microsoft's online Office Update page to recognize that his PC was lacking the patch:
SP3 causes dialog boxes to pop up incessently If you do manage to get SP3 to install on Office XP, you may encounter the issue that many observers consider the worst: the lack of compatibility of the service pack with major, mission-critical applications — including Microsoft's own. Reader Walter Wood suffers from this problem whenever he uses Microsoft Word to compose e-mail messages for delivery by Microsoft Outlook:
The following programs, and certainly many others, need updates to work with SP3 — and many of the necessary updates weren't available until after SP3 caused enormous headaches:
Ten days after Office XP SP3 was released, Microsoft issued details about incompatibilities such as those described above, especially as they relate to Outlook 2002, the version included in Office XP, and Outlook 2003. See KB 838871. Mail-merging in Word spawns database warnings Installing Office XP SP3 is reported to cause database warnings to pop up every time a mail-merge to Word from a separate database is performed. This was acknowledged by Microsoft as a known issue with Word back in September 2003, but SP3 seems to make the problem crop up more consistently. Every time you run the mail-merge, you see a warning such as the following:
There's an error in the article, however. Where the description shows "11.0" in the Registry branch, the number should be "10.0". Don't bother trying to uninstall SP3 In case you've already run Service Pack 3 and you're so sick of it that you want to get rid of it, think again. It can't be undone using the Add/Remove Programs control panel. You may be able to roll back to your old configuration using System Restore, however. |
I havent even downloaded SP1...every time I uploaded something from Windows, things get messed up.

normally, if there is a problem with your connection, either you did something or a virus did something for you. first, make sure you are virus free. AVG-free is the ticket. you should also have spybot - search and destroy on your hard drive, running regularly (daily) and ad-aware. with those three software programs you can rest assured that you are virus free, provided they update and run on a daily basis. i very rarely run into anything that thet can't handle.
ok, so now you are virus free. does IE work? if not, at this point i highly recommend firefox. it runs just like IE without the viruses and bugs. no firefox? i would go into tools > internet options > and start checking to make sure everything is the way it should be. click on the tabs, check connection, check advanced, basically just nose around and see what's what. if you haven't gotten it connected by now, and you had viruses or bugs removed (registry bugs can be a real pain to track down) then re-install IE. to re-install it, i think you have to remove it via start > control panel > add or remove programs > add/remove window components (on left hand side of window) to remove the current IE. once you re-install, the default settings should get you up and running. let me know how things work out, if they do - or even if they don't. remember, remove the viruses and bugs first, then re-install. |
Ok, I have narrowed it down to that the computer automaticly updates itself, IE no longer works.
I go to system restore, undo the updates, and it works. Problem is....I turned off the auto-updates, but this morning...TADA! Log in screen, and same thing. Aim starts and works, IE is a no go. I am gunna turn the auto updates off again |
you know, service pack 3 might solve all of your problems...
|
these updates come out for a reason
|
turning off auto updates is a poor idea. From how out of date your updates are that might be why your computer is compromised in the first place. I would do a fresh reinstall and get updates from the beginning like you should.
|
wow pre SP1 computer? no wonder it doesn't work, its from 2002

IMO reformat you pc reinstall network, mobo, video drivers DL and install sp1-sp3 reinstall rest of drivers dl and install firefox delete IE from tool bar and desktop(uninstall it) now dl and install your antivirus Now if you do all the above int hat order you should never encounter problems unless you are browsing the pron or simply get a new computer if your on a 2002 or older machine |
I dunno what I have, the lap top is brand new as of Christmas 2007.
