Removed carb...now wont stay on

I removed the carb the other day to tighten down some of the intake bolts that seem to have come loose on the 72. I damaged the carb gasket, so I picked one up at the PT job.
I tighten the intake bolts, put ont he carb, hook it back up, and now it wont stay on.
I turn the key, fires up, then dies right off.
Im thinking this is a fuel issue since most if not all the fuel in the bowls are gone, but I would figure that its been filled since, no?
Once I get it going, if I press on the pedal, it runs like ****, hoppin around, almost like the timing is off?
I made no other changes other then removing the carb, and putting it back on. Any ideas?

Ok, tried adjusting timing...not helping.
Something is up with the fuel, and I dunno wtf.

check vacuum lines; power brake line, pvc line...

Def sounds like a vacum problem

Twas a vac problem...big one in fact.

You see...I found out the other day that the intake manifold bolts had backed off, causing oil to spray on to the engine, aming the smoke. After countless times I thought it was the valve cover or oil pan, which in some cases it was, but it seems that the intake itself is warped.
Koll came over, and was trying to help me fix it. I looked, and saw fuel mist coming from around the bottom of the carb.
Sure enough, where the carb sat was warped, and was not flat. There was space under the carb, between the gasket and the intake. Enough to put another gasket in there.
The bolts were as tight as they could go, and the carb did not budge when pushing it...so we concluded that the carb flange is warped, as is the whole intake.
So I will be looking to purchase a new intake,. Looks like some of that part time money is going right to work....yay.

ill have to look around, i think i might actually have a sbc intake laying around

BigAls87Z28 08-22-2008 06:01 PM

Dont bother...Ive had my eye on getting a edelbrock rpm air gap for a while.
I have an intake, but its for center bolt heads.
I do ahve a set of Center bolt heads...but thats another thing I dont want to tackle.

Another case in the 'Reasons To Use A Torque Wrench' file...

BigAls87Z28 08-24-2008 12:25 AM

I had removed the intake about a year ago cause of leaking out of the back of the intake. Sealed it, and it ran great. I did use a torque wrench as well, followed the little book, and torqued it as per the pattern.
Oh well. Im thinking of just cleaning up the L98 heads I have, throw the intake I have on, and just be done with it.

JSPERFORMANCE 08-24-2008 08:11 AM

Whatever you do don't touch the timing gears!!!! lol!!

JL8Jeff 08-24-2008 08:35 AM

Just get a good used intake like Scott has and bolt it on. I wouldn't waste time with the L98 heads unless you're going to do some other stuff like cam to take advantage of it.

BigAls87Z28 08-24-2008 07:39 PM

ahahah, very funny Josh...

Anyways...yeah well I figured that the L98 heads are better then the POS smog heads I ahve on there now, and with the L98 irons heads, I will pick up a few points of compression over the 72cc chamber ones I have now.

A tech I work with thinks that it could tbe the carb, not teh intake that is warped. I will look at it again after work one day.

JSPERFORMANCE 08-24-2008 07:42 PM

I can mill the base plate and intake surfaces if it is in fact warped but usually they arent so bad that a good gasket won't fix it...

bubba428 08-24-2008 07:47 PM

if your car has the older style head i have a holley street dominator you can take

BigAls87Z28 08-25-2008 10:55 PM

Yes, it is not a centerbolt head, it is the 86 and older one.
