King of the Road that the Z06 Isnt on...

80k 540hp Mustang GT500KR vs 80k 505hp Corvette Z06

Z06 blows the doors off the "King".

Lay the pedal down in the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and you feel and hear the anger all around you. Chevy didn't have to tune the exhaust to hit your ears a certain way. This is just how a 428 V8 sounds at wide-open throttle.

We figure it can't get any worse for the Shelby GT500KR; that is, until the $82K Mustang overheats after less than five minutes of being run near its 6,250-rpm redline in 80-degree weather. This happens twice more, and two out of the three times, the cabin also fills with gasoline fumes.

glad that just came out. I was just talking to my buddies about how i think the new z06 is the best buy out of any performance car. Im not a real big vette fan. But my friend was fighting me trying to tell me how the new shelby is better. I think the z06 can take on the GTR. let them bring it

isnt there a youtube or something vidoe of a z06 and a gtr? and the zo6 wins? I know ive seen it

EchoMirage 09-02-2008 06:45 PM

$83K and all it can do is a 12.8? wow....7+ years of work, nearly 3 times the price, and all it can do is barely tie a bone stock LS1 with DRs. i have a feeling a similarly prepped, 7 year old f-body could out handle it too.

the article is right. all youre doing is buying the name, not the car.

DevilDougWS6 09-02-2008 09:32 PM

gah..why did you have to post that youtube link? i seriously HATE the ignorance that goes around on those video comments....and i feel like i have to hunt down and kill the mother ****ing ignorant pieces of **** that ****ing post on there thinking their ALMIGHTY GTR is the best mother****ing car on the road...and they can't even afford one. hell if i had the money id buy a TWO z06s and make them way faster and better handling than the gtr.

Frosty 09-03-2008 05:39 AM

Stock for stock a GTR should be a Z06 on a road course....just because there's a few Youtube clips out there stating otherwise doesn't mean it happens across the board...

TNTramair 09-03-2008 10:31 AM

Chevrolet isn't taking many new-school shortcuts here. This Z06 has a 428-cubic-inch V8. OK, so it's the modern, fuel-injected, all-aluminum 7.0-liter LS7 V8, but this is a lot of engine to find in any mass-produced 2008 passenger car. It also has a dry-sump oil system so you know it's hard-core

well its a 427...but whos counting anyway.

they keep comparing apples and oranges...Vettes and Mustangs have never been in the same league anyway.

the whole GT-r thing.....it lost to a ZR1 Vette...not a Z06. the Zo6 actually got its ass handed to it several times across the states on road coarses. BUT, there is claim that the GT-r thats been doin so was a factory "ringer" car...so who knows what we can beleive now a days anyway.

not with me...lol...i learned my lesson. you cant argue with stupidity, no matter how right you are. i just state my peace and call it a day.

GT-R is a great car, but...physics is physics.
a 3900lb AWD 480hp 2+2 coupe vs a 3132lb RWD 505hp sports car go a track...who's gunna win?

Im sure that the GT-R is a easier car to drive due to the advanced electronics to make it handle like a dream, but given similar situations, the lighter, more powerful car should win at the track every time unless the Z06 is that unsorted or the GTR has some sort of advanced anti-gravity device aboard.

EchoMirage 09-03-2008 01:57 PM

the nissan also had slicks for it ring run. its been proven they cheated

NJSPEEDER 09-03-2008 03:37 PM

The GTR, like it or not, is the upper end of the sub-100k performance market when it boils down to absolute numbers. Be it through a computer controlled attempt at the driving experience or not, the car can flat out lay down numbers.

I have seen things around with people bagging on how it launches or drives, but I put most of that to the fact that it is a very thinly veiled race car really. Most of the complaints I have seen involve what turned out to be the cars one expected weak point, the transmission. I guess all of the little pretend Mario Andretti's are being abusive right out of the box and finding their way back to dealerships well before the 500 mile recommended break in period has expired.

The Z06 defeinitely has the styling advantage and no import is going to measure up to the happy dance a V8 exhaust causes in your pants, but if you wanna play the bang for the buck performance numbers game, the GTR is at the top right now.

BTW, the GTR has to be one of the ugliest friggin cars I have ever seen. :barf:

There's debate on that, they weren't full blown slicks according to a few places that discussed it, regardless there's a ton of talk that Nissan sent out a few ringers.

BigAls87Z28 09-03-2008 05:57 PM

They were R compound Bridgestone Pontenza's....
Not slicks, but sure as hell not as "road worthy" as thoes POS Goodyear F1 supercar tires are.
I wish that GM would give teh Z06 a performance package, MRC shocks, CC brakes, and Pilot Sport Cup tires..

rscamaro73 09-03-2008 08:44 PM

Mustang story - my wife's best friend....her husband bought a Shelby in PA...after it was paid off he sent it off to R.I. to get the Super Snake package ($30K by itself).....

Anyways......so he's spent all this money...car looks AWESOME in pictures....anyways, he's driving it around and the CHECK ENGINE light comes on....then seconds later the ENGINE FAILURE light is on and car shuts off....(safety feature on these things). Kenne Belle SC tune must suck, as he mentioned several other people got the kits put on and they had similar issues...I think it took him 2 tunes to get it to be able to 'drive' it w/o the CEL on....and he's STILL babying it....of course he never took it to the track and 'beat it down' like we'd do our cars (well, me more on mine....lol).

I dunno about you....but I'd take the Vette over all these others based off price per ounce of FUN....

DevilDougWS6 09-03-2008 09:15 PM

imo the vette would be way better bang for the buck.....even if you got an older z06 for 25k and modded it a little bit it would outperform the skyline....for all its worth 100k? **** that...id rather spend 30k on a car that looks and performs better, newer is not always better.

That's always the argument.. you could take a Civic dump 100k into and beat both the GTR and Z06

Last time I checked, Saturn V rockets cost a bit more then 100k.

Sure you could beat it in a drag race, but track wise? Tube RWD chassis with Civic shell over it...ok.

DevilDougWS6 09-04-2008 01:59 PM

my arguement is that you dont NEED 100k to make a car fast and handle well. you can take something older and make it way better than something new with about a tenth of the cost....its all about hype.

That's such a ricer mentality. It's more than just handling and performance. It's the name, it's the overall quality of the car, it's the WARRANTY and dealer support.

You're failing to realize that you're taking a car(whether it be a Civic, Fbody etc) that's already built and taking parts that are already made/fabricated to make it perform better.

If you're saying that you can build a car from scratch, fabricate everything yourself and have it perform better and be as nice as a ZR1 or GTR with a warranty for 1/10th of the cost then I have some beach front property in Arizona to sell you at a really good price. :)
