performance increase?

ok i just picked up an ultra z hood for my 98 z and i currently have the k&n intake on my car, should i see a decent increase in power while cruzing or would i see a better increase upgrading to an slp flow pac?

WildBillyT 10-14-2008 09:50 PM

In my opinion, it's really just an appearance mod.

Tru2Chevy 10-14-2008 09:57 PM

you might see a small increase at high speeds, but I couldn't say for sure. I would imagine that the Ultra-Z hood grabs more air than an SS hood. Not sure if it would be more or less gain than the FTRA / FloPac.

ok without the hood in the picture any idea if the flow pac is better than the k&n? i was actually looking to trade for flowpac setup but will just keep the k&n if there the same performance wise.

Tru2Chevy 10-14-2008 10:31 PM

the flow pac will definitely be better than your K&N setup....

In essance, ram air doesnt "work" til 80 MPH or so...

ins0mnia24 10-15-2008 04:22 PM

The K&N kit for 98-02 LS-1's is junk..
It's main problem is that it doesnt isolate the engine bay temps from the incoming air and the Intake Air Temp sensor..
So your I.A.T. sensor is or will be reading a hotter air temp..
An air lid set-up or the Volant type of kits for LS1 Ram air hood cars that actually seals to the hood would be more effecient..
Both types of kits will seal off the I.A.T. sensor and air intake to the t.b. from the engine bay..

I beg to differ. Although a bit pricey, i wouldnt call it a ripoff. it definately works. i made a ram air box similiar to the flo pac's design and i gained nearly 2 tenths and 1.5 mph on average; and i already had the SLP lid and K&N filter. if you can, buy that stuff used. its a bit pricey. thats why i made mine out of sheet metal

Wouldn't want you guys getting to full of yourselves...

The K&N intake has been proven in the past to be barely an improvement over stock.

The SLP lid, ram air, and smooth bellows on the other hand helps a ton. The car grabs almost all of it's air from underneath, hardly anything actually hits the leading edge of the hood because of mediocre aero on the nose.

Get the SLP or Fast Toys ram air kits, both are easy to install, and you will see a nice gain.

yea i traded that k&n for a tsp lid and ram air duct a month or so ago

LTb1ow 11-27-2008 07:48 PM

Is that the duct that goes in front of the rad?

unfortunately, no. its not too hard to make though. you just need to take a few measurements. if you know somebody who has a FTRA or SLP duct, that would help. I didnt know anyone who had it so i just winged it

LTb1ow 11-28-2008 04:56 PM

That would be the reason why I would sell my car and get a 96.
