Sub Size? Please tell me your input.

So I have some money to spend on subs. I , just getting a new transmission and going halfs with my parents on the body work from when the lady hit me. I have a 7in clarion touchscreen head unit and alpine type s speakers all around. I have the custom sub box and a kenwood 600watt amp. I want a pair of 10 in subs but not sure what to get. I want something decent I was thinking just finishing off the whole alpine type s since I am looking for something reasonable. I just want to improve my sound not bump my hole neighborhood and rattle my trunk. so let me know what I should get and If I need to get another amp. Thanks

If you already have a box and are planning on using that, make sure that whatever subs you buy are designed to work in a box with the size and port config. of the one you have.

Personally I'm a fan of JL subs. I have an old 10" w1 in my Jeep and it still hits very well, but isn't overwhelming.

big fan of JL's as well. they are clean and sound great. depends on the box really but for the most part smooth hitting.

id go with two jl w3s and a alpine pdx amp. my buddy has that in his ram and it sounds amazing and he has type r? all around. his system is the best around till i get enough money to get mine. =D

Soundsplinter Rl-p 10" and you will be very very happy.. more of an SQL sub. Won't be really loud, and will sound awesome.

Stick with the alpine setup but use the type R subs you get a cleaner sound and more continuous power

Never gone wrong with Alpine, just ordered some Alpine speakers for my car, IMO JL's and Alpine are the best, cant go wrong with either

Lol how come everyone dangles from Alpine's nuts? Why not try the other non mainstream brand that makes better products?

yungcutz1533 01-09-2009 03:41 PM

ppl are "on alpines nutz" because they make some of the best car audio products out there. they avarage 150watts rms more then the other mainstream competitors and non mainstream products are non mainstream for a reason: they're either poor quality or high end quality making them more expensive then alpine products.

Not the case in the slightest bit. They average 150 rms more? What are you saying? They underrate their amps? Because i would put money on the fact that MAYBE they would bench at their RMS rating, if not lower. I can name plenty of brands that bench well over their RMS rating that your not gonna find in bestbuy or any store like that. I just think everyone should try something different then Alpine. Its not bad stuff, but their is alot better stuff out there for the money.

FYI there are companies that have products at Alpine's pricing and cheaper that are better quality. And those company's higher end equipment couldn't be touched by Alpine in the quality department.

sweetbmxrider 01-09-2009 05:11 PM

so are you going to mention any of these companies? you have captivated my interest :D

TheBandit 01-09-2009 08:52 PM

Sure.. Mach5 audio, AA, DD, Fi.. to name a few.. all make better products than Alpine.. mostly subwoofers from those companies.. But why not pay the extra money for quality?

Knipps 01-09-2009 08:53 PM

Acronyms don't help when people haven't heard of the companies you're talking about.

TheBandit 01-10-2009 07:49 AM

Actually that is the name of the companies but what do i know?.. AA is Ascendant Audio.. DD is Digital Designs.. but they all are refered to as their acronym.

Im not trying to come off as a prick.. Alpine makes some great stuff don't get me wrong. But I just like to let people know about the other not so mainstream brands that make awesome products.

yungcutz1533 01-10-2009 05:14 PM

AA and DD do make great products but the reason you dont hear about people using those subs in their cars is because of their weight. AA and DD subwoofers are primarily used for live sound. That's why their sub woofers can weigh anywhere from 35 and 75 pounds a piece. Just for comparison the AA 12" Mayhem subwoofer weighs 65lbs ( http://www.ascendantaudio.com/mayhem.php) while the Alpine 12" type E is only 12lbs ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1199494646811 )

TheBandit 01-10-2009 05:32 PM

That's cause they have such big magnets. But their build quality and sound is a lot better. My 15" Soundsplinter RL-p was about 40lbs i think.

yungcutz1533 01-10-2009 05:46 PM

Yea and the weight is why most ppl dont go for them. But If you have like an SUV or any type of car where the weight wont make a difference to you then i would definitely reccommend those subs to you.

Jersyboyy 01-10-2009 06:09 PM

Crazy did u get subs yet? Pics sound clips opinion? If not buy mine ill sell them to you CHEAP with the sub box made for a thirdgen. (cheap for two nice pioneers in a custom box)

LTb1ow 01-11-2009 12:40 AM

No subs = good subs.

EODMonkey 04-03-2009 08:47 PM

look into mtx, i've been using them for years and my 9500's hit hella hard

91chevywt 04-05-2009 03:47 PM

You will be more than satisfied with alpine type s subwoofers. If you are looking for good all around sound quality they are a reputable brand name. I have never heard anybody say "alpine is junk." If anybody thinks that they are full of crap.

NJSPEEDER 04-05-2009 05:12 PM

The biggest thing is to match components. Don't worry about max power, just buy an amp with a clean signal and match the RMS power level and range of the subs to that.

My rule of thumb was always to get an amp that was at least 200 watts RMS more than the subwoofer. So you keep the amp turned down slightly and you can avoid clipping and destroying your woofer and amp.
