Chrome to Paint
I picked up a set of valve covers for real cheap, I am not sure whether they are chromed or stainless. They are pretty heavy so they may be stainless, idk. Anyway, I hate the whole shiny look, so I wanna rough em up and paint em flat black. How do I do that?

sand, prime, paint?
Thats what I was thinking, just wanted some more opinions.
just put them on shiny....Your car is pretty good at turning everything black with filth
hey at least my SFCs are nice and subtle.

Sand and paint is right. If you can get them blasted you will get the best results.
Does it matter what media? I have a sandblaster at work I could use....
If it's steel, I'd use sand or beads. Some will say black beauty (carbide I think) but I wouldn't use that on anything except very rusty thick metal.
You can sandblast them but I would suggest a few good coats of primer to even the surface out after before paint. And be careful if you use sand.....too much heat could warp the covers and cause leaks. Also be sure to wash them very very well to get all the sand out, especially if they are baffled.
An alternative to painting them would be powedercoat as well....for a much more durable finish. |
Ok cool, I think we have em full of sand so that is good. I will try that at lunch tmmr.
