LIFE pictures from GM Tarrytown Factory

Google now has a digital archive of all the LIFE photos taken. Just searching I found a bunch of old photos taken from inside the old factory in Tarrytown, NY that closed in the mid '90s. These pictures are all of Chevys. There are no dates, but judging from the wing backs, it looks like 1959. It's something to have this glimpse of the cars taking shape that we now consider classics.

This one is my favorite:http://images.google.com/hosted/life...%3Den%26sa%3DN

When I was driving thru Ohio I passed thru Lordstown plant?

That's where the original Firebirds were made and I was kind of thinking how cool that must have been to see all those muscle cars coming out of there and now it might be out of business by December :(

Yeah, the first gens were built there. I think after that they were moved to Norwood/Van Nuys. Shame the Norwood plant is long gone.

They had 3 plants making Fbodies? Norwood was the first Camaro plant, then they opened up Van Nuys a few years later. I didnt know about Lordstown.

Inside the US: First Gen Camaros were built in Norwood and Van Nuys (LA). First gen Firebirds were built in Norwood, Van Nuys, and Lordstown.

Outside the US, Camaros were built at the Yutivo plant in the Phillipines, GM Continental (Belgium), GM Suisse in Bienne, Switzerland, and a place in Caracas, Venezuela. These were assembly plants for Camaro "kits" that were sent over. I don't think anything was really manufactured there, just assembled.
