Pranks using speed cameras

So, these High School Kids are apparently using speed camera to get back at those people who wrong them in the past.

The article doesn't back up its claim with any hard facts/quotes, but interesting story nonetheless.

yeah i never understood how they can prosecute people with the speed cameras, all you have to do in your defense is say it wasnt you driving

SRGN 12-22-2008 12:30 AM

I can't wait to try it with the new red light cameras they're going to have in E Brunswick:rofl:

ok then....who did you loan your car to?

its along the same principle as someone sitting in your car and dropping drugs on the floor when you get pulled over, since they are on the floor and not in someones pocket, if the person who put them there dosent own up......the owner of the car gets hit with it

Lol $40 speeding ticket or obstructing justice when you try to play hard ass and say your not telling them who was driving. Ultimately the occurrences in a vehicle fall back on the registered owner if they either dont provide someone else responsible or try to play mr smart guy. Playing your rights doesnt work like it does in the movies.

Mike 12-22-2008 01:16 AM

a simple example is.....

a couple weeks ago i let a guy i work with borrow my trailer to tow a car he was selling up to north jersey. at some point along the parkway he got stuck in an easy pass lane and couldnt get over so he drove right through. instead of taking a picture of the truck pulling the trailer, they took a picture of my plate, and mailed me the ticket.

ticket was mine to pay, and mine to worry about taking up with the guy that borrowed the trailer, the state dosent give a ****, as long as somone is paying them their money

camaro2you 12-22-2008 08:30 AM

Never knew you could get a ticket for taking a trailer through ezpass....lol ive done it a dozen times now....

Mike 12-22-2008 08:30 AM

you dont.......if the car has ezpass

Unless there is a special exception that I'm not aware of, motor vehicle violations have a 30 day statute of limitations. After 30 days, they can't charge the driver, you could bring them to court to say they were driving and they can't be charged since it's past the expiration of the statute of limitations.

The interesting flaw in this prank is that the kids are forging false vehicle plates. If they get stopped or caught with these plates, I'm fairly certain it is a felony offense. Likewise, should they beinvolved in an accident while these "plates" are on their cars it would be interesting to see how their insurance carriers would handle the matter.

Speed Cameras are a disgusting means of generating revenue and an infringement on our protection under the principle of innocent until proven guilty, but this type of prank won't change that. It just has some disturbing implications for anyone who might be the target of such "pranks" since it affects both the victim's insurance status and their licensing status. Not sure I see the "joke" in this.

probably more of a revenge thing on a teacher or other student that got out of control and every one is doing it now

They don't....they said many of the kids are borrowing similar make / model / color cars to attach the fake plates too.

Andrews also said that this could hurt the integrity of the Speed Camera Program. "It will cause potential problems for the Speed Camera Program in terms of the confidence in it," he said.
sounds perfect to me :)
