Why no shoutbox?

I'm on another forum that runs the same version of vbulletin and they have a shoutbox(chat) on the top of the page and it's pretty cool. NJFBOA needs to get with the times and make one instead of the little chat that we have that everyone goes on occasionally.

Chat / shoutbox uses a large amount of system resources, and our server can't handle the load that would be placed on it when many users are on it at once. Until the club can afford to upgrade to a more powerful server, there will most likely not be a chat feature built into the site.

i dont really like them, i think they look tacky and allow for more flaming

The shout box/chat room thing keeps coming up and Justin and I have talked about it before. Just don't have the resources.

The way the forum is growing we are still a few years from having to upgrade our host, maybe once we get to that point it will be something we can pursue.

while we're on the topic... hardware specs of the box? fully dedicated or shared?

NJSPEEDER 01-06-2009 02:55 PM

The company is KnownHost

Not sure of the server specs, I know that it is a shared.

The server is excellent for our needs. Great customer service, never any down time issues, and as long as we stay with them on this server our costs are locked in. Prices from other companies have gone up significantly the last few years.

bobb1589 01-06-2009 03:11 PM

shared being a VPS or just shared hosting?

NJSPEEDER 01-06-2009 03:17 PM

Not really sure of the details, Justin takes care of the technical side of things. I am sure he will chime in with details next week when he gets back from vacation.
