BRUMOS WINS!!!! BRUMOS WINS!!!!

David Donahue, on the 40th anniversary of his father's historic victory at the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona, has put Porsche back in victory lane!!!

The last 2 hours came down to a 4 car fight for the win. That faded to three cars, then with about 45 mins to go it became clear it was a two car race. Juan Pablo Montoya put up a fight, but even the fantastic handling his Lexus Riley had no solution for the straight away speed of the Brumos Porsche Riley.

What a great way to kick off the 2009 racing season. New pole records in both DP and GT classes, new record for laps covered under the revised track configuration with 735 completed in the 24hours, and some fantastic side by side racing.

I only wish Speed channel had stayed on all night to cover the amazing action in the dark.

BurninrubberGT 01-25-2009 04:00 PM

had nothing to do this weekend so i watched all 14.5 hours

sucks gainsco had the gearbox problems...it was great to see the fords crap out

but man the last 2 hours was just awsome racing, the whole race was close, gratz to brumos even tho they had a little extra hp

gxp.r's didnt do too bad considering their problems and lack of speed at daytona, they got out with some decent points....one of the rx-8 took out the 07 gxp.r in the pits while they were leading, and put them back 5 laps and cost them a podium....god i hate them

The GXP.R's never fair that well on the high speed tracks. They have had the durability the last few years to pull off a few wins, but no one has anything for the RX8 in a straight line. The knock against the RX8 is the crap mileage, which plays into the GXP's hands on the shorter facilities where there is more throttle transitioning.

The Ford's, I wish I could make fun of their issues, but they all had the same parts failure and it is a Delphi supplied part, ssosoooooooo GM kinda sabotaged them I guess. lol One of the Ford's did finish 4th despite making two more pit stops than the winner. Kind of impressive considering the pace they managed to keep at the front the whole race.

I really wonder what would have happened if there were only the average 15 full course cautions instead of the new record 24. Figure 1 lap of caution is the same amount of time as nearly 3 laps at full speed. Could they have hit 900 laps? Would it have played against the Porsche's and their notorious crappy mileage?

That is the beauty of endurance racing, there is no way to compensate for how good or bad 24 hours will go and why compared to the 3 hours or less most other major motorsports events take.

Got a few months until the next time Grand Am will be on TV, but only a few weeks until we get to see the ALMS crowd take on the 12 Hours of Sebring :drive:
