Actually, it was the owner's first track day with that car. In the AM I ran similar lap times. The picture was taken near the end of the day, by which time he was massively quicker than I could ever be in my car. My terminal speed that day was roughly 125-128. I'd put his somewhere around 160! His car also corners well and has the ability to STOP! The passing speeds are no big deal, they're in the mirror and then they're disappearing toward the horizon. The closing rates on a long straight however, are impressive (sometimes a 60-70 mph differential) and require vigilant awareness. Think about that closing rate as you are approaching a braking zone going into a tight hairpin!
The group I usually run with has a large number of very fast cars and (Craftsman style) trucks driven by very skilled and experienced drivers. Almost no one drives anything that could be considered pure stock. I am quite used to being passed/lapped on a fairly regular basis by much faster cars. Even driven at its limit my street legal Z-28 has nothing to offer as a challenge to C6 Z-06s, Vipers, GT3s, full-on Trans Am racecars, or 750HP trucks. Those are just the facts of life for a low bucks, primarily stock F-Body in that company.
On the other hand, the car has a best lap time of 1:30 flat at Summit with me and a passenger. It may not be a "record pace", but it is a respectable time for a car of its type.
Always liked that picture because it captures so much of the diversity of that group. |
